B Cellars Red Blend Napa Valley Blend 24 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This shows distinct bell pepper and eucalyptus on the nose along with some very ripe dried fruit tones and rich black currant fruit over some soil tones. Cool and compact on entry with classic black currant fruit with some slight herbal overtones and vegetal hints. Moderately large in the mouth with good balance in a slightly rough and rustic style that highlights soil and mineral tones. The fruit is intense and complex though never shaking the herbaciousness in the mouth though the modest finish is decidedly more fruit driven with some subtle vanilla overtones. 89pts

Founded by Jim Borsack and Duffy Keys in 2003, B Cellars winery is the collaboration of two like-minded individuals that shared a vision and, through a happenstance meeting, brought to life their dream of creating a food-centric winery focused on blending varietals using a combination of Old and New World wine making perspectives. Soon after, they met their third key player, Kirk Venge. Named “one of the Top 20 New Winemakers in the World” by Food & Wine Magazine (October 2005), Kirk brings with him a 37-year winemaking legacy through his father, Nils Venge, and a keen understanding of the Napa appellation. A bond was established almost immediately between Jim, Duffy and Kirk. With Kirk’s passion for great wine, first-hand knowledge and commitment to excellence, it quickly became apparently that he was the ideal winemaker for B Cellars. B Cellars grew out of a love for food and wine but evolved into a passion and drive to craft fine wines that surpass the expected. Utilizing a multi-vineyard, multi-varietal winemaking strategy, acquiring and blending Napa Valley's finest grapes and employing a team of passionate, hard-working staff with impeccable credentials are just a few of the qualities that make B Cellars a unique and memorable winery. B Cellars produces matchless blends that are favored by chefs and restaurateurs for their distinct character, depth, and food-friendly "layers" of flavor. Read less

A fantastic wine - starting out with chocolate and spice and cherry on the nose. Leads to rich plummy notes and a really nice undercurrent of minerality throughout. More mineral on the finish, a really nice wine.

Wow! For 2005 this blend is firing on all cylinders! This “Super Tuscan” inspired wine with a touch of Petite Sirah shows a wonderful, deep black/blue color. The Sangiovese from Juliana vineyard in Pope Valley thrives in Tuscan like conditions and enjoys most of its days bathed in the sun. True to our philosophy we blended this venerable varietal with two powerful and traditional Bordeaux varietals, Merlot and Cabernet from Biale & To Kalon vineyards. This wine possesses wonderful red rock candy, cassis and red stone fruit aromas with a touch of French oak vanillin for thickening the nose. On the palate are more bright cherry fruit and impressive acid and tannin structure. This is not a “heady” or “syrupy” wine but one with an array of old world influenced flavors and fine balance. Cellared properly this wine should improve for 2 years and cellar well for 8 or more.
