Azienda Agricola Tenuta Montanello Barolo 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Wood on the nose immediately, a little sweet, cinnamon sugar and toasty spice lends this a nice woodsy note with a little stemmy spice just a touch green adding some freshness and detail. This is soft broad and a bit diffuse on the palate with a nice load of tannins but the wood tannins are more obvious. Showing nice fruity aromas of wild cherries, this shows good integration of oak on the backend as the wine finds a bit of a center. A bit small scaled and leaning more towards the modern than the traditional this retains a light, fairly airy feel to it. 87pts

Tenuta Montanello is located in the Comune of Castiglione Falletto, a small mediaeval village in the heart of the Langhe, the land of truffles, top quality wines and ancient castles. This is the area where Barolo wine is produced: an amphitheatre of gently-rolling, restful hills at an altitude of between 200 and 500 metres where vines tend to dominate picturesque landscapes, painted in attractive colours and with unexpected contrasts. Tenuta Montanello stretches between these hills in a single 40-hectare estate, of which 11 hectares are cultivated with wine grapes. The high prestige wines that are characteristic of this area such as Barolo, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto have been produced here for many years. Bartolomeo Racca bought the Montanello Estate from the Count of Castiglione Falletto, Patrizio Filippo di Scagnello, on April 19, 1864. For many years, it was the home of the first wine growers' cooperative of the Langhe: the Cantina Sociale of Castiglione Falletto which united no less than 36 wine growers of this comune towards the end of the 19th century. This marked the start of the production and sale of the first Barolo wine. Today, five generations later, the Racca family still owns Tenuta Montanello, now managed by Alberto Racca. A traditional approach is applied to the grape growing and wine making processes, incorporating more modern techniques and technologies where appropriate. The hill of Montanello has always been considered one of the best cru of the Barolo area; Renato Ratti included it in his Map of Barolo and Slow Food has classified it as one of the Great Vineyards of the Langhe. The composition of the soil and excellent exposure to the South, South West and West produce a Barolo with a good alcohol content and penetrating bouquet, worthy of its long history. Read less

Bony, a bit dirty, soft with a touch of va giving needed lift, a touch of bosco, very clear, very slightly herbal less ripe fruit, red currant fruit, clean and precise, bright acidity, slightly astringent tannins, bright in the mouth, a bit front loaded, clean finish, very bright, piquant acid and tasty tannins

AWE blind tasting - very woodsy, forest floor, river rocks, mineral water, wild raspberry liquor, a bit lean smelling but fresh and transparent, and a bit fleshy, refreshing, a nice bitter herb tone balances the fresh, crisp raspberry fruit, a bit simple but nice mouthfeel, nice finish cleansing and clean, not great but very drinkable 89-90

6,600 bottles produced. This spent 1 year in barrique one third of which was new, 1/3 second passage, and 1/3 third passage. There is serious intensity here on the nose with rose, hickory, menthol and tobacco notes framing very fresh red fruits and sappy, vegetal floral tones. The wood adds a bit of an autumnal character here and rounds out the entry nicely. Unlike the 2004 the tannins here are wonderfully ripe and in fine balance with the bright acidity that gives this wine good cur and focus even if it is a touch linear at this point. Not particularly fruit driven with some interesting pomegranate and mulberry notes covering a core of dark spices and rich earthy tones. The backend turns a bit more red fruited and offers nice follow through with a particularly intense rose notes and attractive strawberry/rhubarb finish. This really shows nice purity on a sleek medium weight frame and is a fine expression of the grape. 91pts

Smoky notes great the nose with low intensity tobacco, dried apricot, fudge, fig, menthol, butcher’s was and raw wood notes. Aromatically this is a bit clumsy. In the mouth this is compact and soft with tannins that seem a bit dry. The flavors are earthy and a bit woody with notes of roasted herbs and cedar framing the dried fruit/dried citrus peel tones. A bit hot but with good length though those unripe tannins pop out again on the finish. 86pts

This wine saw 100% new barrique and 8 days of maceration. Very autumnal and evolved on the nose with dried leaves, dried fruits, a bit sharp with spicy wood tones. Cedary and complex if evolved and a little spearminty. Very soft in the mouth, fluid and easy if slightly drying with licorice tinged dried fruit notes and a hint of rainier cherry. The finish is short and hollow. 83pts
