Azienda Agricola Montevertine Sangiovese Blend Toscana IGT Pian del Ciampolo 1995

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweet cherry and spice earth meld on the nose offering up a classic Tuscan profile. A touch of brett adds some complexity but it is very subtle. Delicate and elegant in the mouth yet with fine structure that amply supports the deep roasted black cherry fruit. Really gains subtle complexity with air and finishes with a nice flourish. Very food friendly and really classic Sangiovese 91pts.

MONTEVERTINE lies within the heart of the Chianti hills, in the community of Radda at an altitude of 425 m above sea level. Documents show that the site has been dwelled since the 11th century. Traces of the original construction, which undoubtedly was of defensive nature and which later on had been converted to a rural housing, are still preserved. Our wine-making procedure is extremely traditional and it has been never been varied since the very first vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented in glazed cement vats, without temperature control, and the must is topped up twice daily in order to keep the top marc moist and to obtain a slow extraction of the tannins from the skins. After the racking off, the malolactic fermentation is also carried out using cement vats. At the end of the malolactic fermentation, our wines are stored in wooden barrels over a period of approximately two years. The wines will never be filtered and the topping-up method, without any pumps, is used for the bottling. For the ageing of our wines we use oak barrels from Slavonia with a 5.5 to 18 hectolitre capacity and 225 litre Allier casks. Read less

You can tell from the nose that this is going to be a strict wine as the bouquet is full of ash, eggshell and bone. Over that white austerity one finds lovely fruit with tobacco and roast herb notes highlighted by hints of gingerbread and mint. With air this gains more soil tones and suggestions of shoe polish and black olive brine. In the mouth this is rich with a fine spine of astringent tannins and superb acidity that gives this tremendous cut and freshness. This is certainly austere but at the same time it has such precise and faceted fruit that it is immensely engaging, and in any event the fruit powers through on the finish adding a sweet counterpoint to the finale. 92pts

From Magnum this is open and giving apon pouring with great animale notes adding complexity to the earth, roasted raspberry, clean leather and old baking spice notes that dominate the nose. With air intriguing notes of iron and clay emerge. This has entered it's drinking window with soft yet intact acidity and layered, tender tannins. The fruit has a touch of candied ripeness yet offers a faint herbal note up front which gains through the midpalate leading toward a blond tobacco note on the finish. This remains elegant and balanced with a long finish. Restrained and subtle and in need of more attention than it got tonight. Drink through 2016

When you're looking to go back to basics in Tuscany, stick with classic estates like this one. This bottle is just coming around but could truly be held for well over a decade longer. Full of aromas of black cherries, blackberries, violets, clay, and thyme. Made from old Sangiovese vines that have since been replanted. Only time will tell if Il Sodaccio will ever be made again.

We can't get enough of this Tuscan Sangiovese. Aromas of black cherries, blackberries, violets, clay and thyme. This wine is ready to drink today, or can be held for a few more years.
