Azelia Barolo DOCG 2004
Love the dark purple color. Very big nose--some cigar or leather, some cherry/berry fruit. Surprisingly light on the tip of the tongue. No fruit detected there at all--almost watery. As the wine moves over the tongue some cherry/berry pops up, but not much. Lot's of tannin, now. As a previous reviewer comments, air time helps this wine. Things seem to harmonize or integrate. Try this one with Mozzarella. I love the fact that this is not a fruit-heavy wine. I am going to enjoy this one. US$35.99 at Total Wine.
This is my second bottle of this in the last year, or so. Interesting tinges of brown in the glass. That surprises me a bit. Very light on the fruit on entry to the mouth. Overriding flavors/sensations are dust, tobacco and tannin. Tannin notwithstanding, not as full-bodied as I might have expected. Quite tart on the back of the palate. -- Edit, two days later: On Day 2 this was a much more enjoyable wine—rounder with berry fruit, less noticeable tannin. I am going to upgrade my rating to 3-1/2 challices.
