Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Strawberry and cranberry aromas with tart focused fruit and mineral earthiness on the nose with a pleasant floral character. Fresh, tart red fruit palate of raspberry, strawberry and cranberry with bright acidity and structured tannins, a creamy milk chocolate towards the finish with soft earth.

Avignonesi consists of four wine-producing estates: Le Capezzine, I Poggetti, La Selva and La Lombarda. In total they comprise 225 hectares of open ground, 109 ha of vineyards and 3 ha of olive groves. Fattoria "Le Capezzine" (altitude m 300) Only a few kilometres from Montepulciano, close to the village of Valiano, stands the old farm estate Le Capezzine. It is the heart of the company and it has been impeccably restored. It contains spacious cellars for vinification, cellars for ageing and storing, the vinsantaia, the frantoio (the olive oil mill), warehouses and offices. The estate comprises 19 hectares, of which 7 hectares of vineyards divided as follows: 6 (Prugnolo Gentile) of albarello vines in the "settonce" pattern; 1 dedicated to density experimentation ranging from 2,000 to 8,500 vines per hectare with six different rootstocks; finally 0,4 hectares are dedicated to growing ancient varieties indigenous to Montepulciano and the surrounding area. Estate "I Poggetti" (altitude m 290) This estate is composed of two farms, all located within the boundary of Montepulciano, on the Argiano hills, where Avignonesi’s Vino Nobile has always been produced. The total land area is 68 hectares, 30 of which are used to cultivate Prugnolo Gentile, Mammolo and Canaiolo. Two hectares are planted with the Correggiolo variety of olives which are used to produce the green and aromatic extravirgin olive oil typical of Montepulciano. Estate "La Selva" (altitude m 300) La Selva is situated at Cignano, on the hills of the Chiuso di Cortona and consists of 4 farms - La Selva, Val di Capraia, Paggino and Pian dell’Oca, four superior locations dedicated to the cultivation of classical vine varieties. It covers a total area of 96 hectares, 51 of which are vineyards and 1 olive groves. Here are grown the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc. Estate "La Lombarda" (altitude m 300) This is a 42-hectare farm located close to Le Capezzine and within the uncontaminated countryside of the Chiuso della Valdichiana hills. The soil here is particularly well suited to vine growing. At the moment there are 20 hectares of new vineyards at high density, dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Nero and Merlot. Read less

This is spicy on the nose with herbal tones and slightly barky wood elements, though not a lot of fruit. In the mouth this is round and soft with a slightly chewy feel to the dark fruits and a more assertive red plummy tone on the moderate finish. 85pts

For good order sake, the label shown is not the right one!. The review is supposed to be about the Rosso de Montepulciano DOC and NOT the Rosso Toscana IGT. To avoid confusion kindly amend the picture accordingly. Many thanks beforehand

Bright medium red. High-pitched aromas of red cherry, peppermint, licorice and fresh herbs, plus a whiff of minerality. Juicy, spicy and lean, with almost tart acidity providing precision to the flavors of red cherry, raspberry and mint. Not a fleshy wine but boasts lovely vibrancy and easy quaffability. It’s really not quite complex or layered enough for an outstanding score, but it’s so irresistible I’ll be generous. And the price is a winner too.

Fans of Vino Nobile will adore this pretty and accessible Rosso. It opens with a delicate fragrance of violet, perfumed berries and baking spices. The refined palate delivers juicy wild cherry and raspberry lightly accented with cinnamon notes alongside supple tannins and fresh acidity. A hint of licorice marks the close.

Brilliant ruby red color, delicate aroma, with a distinct hint of ripe fruits, nice balanced taste, harmonious and long lasting. Very versatile wine, made for the daily consumption, can be paired with almost everything but not too involving meals.

Ripe harmony of crushed red fruits and a touch of musk come across determinedly on this everyday Italian. The aromas are delicate, while roughened acidity mean this pairs very easily with a wide range of tomato sauced pastas and pizzas. A light touch of cedary spice as a backnote reminds one it has had 4 months of used barrel contact.

Aromas of berries, chocolate and mild spices follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with a creamy spice character. Drink now.

Bright red. Perfumed aromas of subtle sour red cherry, kirsch and tar are enlivened by a cool floral mintiness. Vinous and classy on the palate, with juicy red berry and mineral flavors. Finishes fresh and long, with smooth, sophisticated tannins and bright acids. Makes a very pretty food wine.
