Avignonesi Nobile di Montepulciano 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This still shows a touch of wood on the nose, which is joined by notes of basil stems, gunpowder, leather and black, jammy fruits. It’s showing impressive complexity right out of the bottle. On the palate there is lively acidity and the tannins have fairly melted away leaving a richly chocolate tinged bed of dark fruits that reveal a bit of wood tannin on the mid-palate. This shows admirable freshness on the palate with nice mineral and spice accents that lead to a richly red-fruited finish. This is drinking very well, and certainly has benefitted from years in the bottle. 91pts

Avignonesi consists of four wine-producing estates: Le Capezzine, I Poggetti, La Selva and La Lombarda. In total they comprise 225 hectares of open ground, 109 ha of vineyards and 3 ha of olive groves. Fattoria "Le Capezzine" (altitude m 300) Only a few kilometres from Montepulciano, close to the village of Valiano, stands the old farm estate Le Capezzine. It is the heart of the company and it has been impeccably restored. It contains spacious cellars for vinification, cellars for ageing and storing, the vinsantaia, the frantoio (the olive oil mill), warehouses and offices. The estate comprises 19 hectares, of which 7 hectares of vineyards divided as follows: 6 (Prugnolo Gentile) of albarello vines in the "settonce" pattern; 1 dedicated to density experimentation ranging from 2,000 to 8,500 vines per hectare with six different rootstocks; finally 0,4 hectares are dedicated to growing ancient varieties indigenous to Montepulciano and the surrounding area. Estate "I Poggetti" (altitude m 290) This estate is composed of two farms, all located within the boundary of Montepulciano, on the Argiano hills, where Avignonesi’s Vino Nobile has always been produced. The total land area is 68 hectares, 30 of which are used to cultivate Prugnolo Gentile, Mammolo and Canaiolo. Two hectares are planted with the Correggiolo variety of olives which are used to produce the green and aromatic extravirgin olive oil typical of Montepulciano. Estate "La Selva" (altitude m 300) La Selva is situated at Cignano, on the hills of the Chiuso di Cortona and consists of 4 farms - La Selva, Val di Capraia, Paggino and Pian dell’Oca, four superior locations dedicated to the cultivation of classical vine varieties. It covers a total area of 96 hectares, 51 of which are vineyards and 1 olive groves. Here are grown the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc. Estate "La Lombarda" (altitude m 300) This is a 42-hectare farm located close to Le Capezzine and within the uncontaminated countryside of the Chiuso della Valdichiana hills. The soil here is particularly well suited to vine growing. At the moment there are 20 hectares of new vineyards at high density, dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Nero and Merlot. Read less

The nose here has layers of caramel and dried fruit tones mixed with intense note of the salty seaside and oyster tones. Thick like honey in the mouth with huge balancing acidity that keep the flavors of panettone, raisins, Christmas cake, and dried orchard fruits bright and lively. A profoundly intense wine. 95pts

This is thick as motor oil, well-used motor oil. On the nose and palate there is just a cascade of chocolate, dried red fruits, butterscotch, mocha and coffee cream notes penetrate every nook and cranny of one’s tongue and mind. The length of this wine if phenomenal. A truly breath-taking wine and one with few equals. 98pts

I had this wine with a braised lamb shank and it paired very nicely. As other reviewers have noted this is a substantial wine with a lot of body and complexity. It worked well with the richness of the meat, I'm not sure I would like to drink it on its own without food.

This is one of my favorite wine's on Bar Italia's wine list, though I prefer the 2007 to the 2008. The 2008 has a nose of black cherry, roasted herbs, and smoky oak and follows with flavors of the same. Great fruit with a silky texture and nicely balanced oak. It lacks the dense black currants of the 2007 that I remember. The finish is lacking for me too. Still overall, consistently one of my favorite wines. A great food wine that I think will surprise Chianti aficionados who have never been introduced to Vino Nobile..

Nose of cherry, flowers and spice. The palate is much bigger and more dry than the aromas let on. Exotic and ripe. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 9/4/10

Was served this wine for room service at Villa Poggiano in Montepulciano ... what a wonderful wine to enjoy in a gorgeous setting! Definitely on my buy list when I get back to the States.

From 10-35 year old vines in the Le Capezzine and I Poggetti Vineyards. The grapes were macerated on their skins for 20-25 days in stainless steel tanks and aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels (50%) and neutral French barriques (50%). Fresh and elegant, this medium-bodied wine shows ample red fruit and notes of violet and savory herbs with a streak of balanced acids and minerality. Fine-grained tannins lend structure to the lingering and pleasant finish. Blend: 85% Prugnolo Gentile 10% Canaiolo Nero 5% Mammolo

The 2011 Vino Nobile displays all the attractive features of a warm vintage, favouring intense, red fruit aromas and a warm, enveloping drinking experience. We were able to harvest ripe, fragrant grapes thanks to the healthy growing environment in our vineyards, where the use of secondary crop under the vines and the distribution of biodynamic preparations have generated a loose, airy soil and strong, vigorous vines which were able to dig their roots deep into the soil to reach the lower deposits of water in the earth and reduce hydric stress. We picked our Sangiovese between September 20th and October 5th and we were so happy with the quality potential that we decided the 2011 vintage would be perfect for reintroducing our icon Nobile “Grandi Annate”. Look out for this wine in 2015, but for now enjoy our Vino Nobile vintage 2011 - genuine, terroir-driven Sangiovese from Montepulciano. - Winery Grapes: Sangiovese Ageing: 18 months in oak Refinement in bottles: Minimum 7 months Alcohol: 14% ** Only 1 in Stock **

An opulent style, this features black cherry, plum, earth and spice flavors. Full and complex, offering fine balance and a lingering aftertaste of tobacco and spice. Avignonesi’s Vino Nobile offers an alluring fragrance of rose petal and balsamic herbs along with cherry and spice accents. The palate delivers restrained black fruit flavors alongside notes of chocolate and licorice. Despite the tannic finish, this is fast approaching its ideal drinking window.
