Auguste Clape Cornas Cuvee Renaissance 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This has a wonderful nose filled with meat, floral mint, and green olive aromas all topped with a nice dash of cracked pepper. On entry this is filled with dusty tannins supporting stiff fruit that shows a nice blend of concentration and minerality but this does lack some acidity and finishes fairly quickly showing some heat and clumsy extraction on the finish. 85pts

Just bursting with intense fruitiness and a touch of oaken spice this is simple and modern on the nose. A touch soft in the mouth and even loose this seems both over-cropped and over-extracted with a very industrial feel that combines a hollow midpalate with somewhat austere tannins. With time this gains a bit of elegance but really only because it lacks stuffing though what fruit there is nice, ripe and sweet. Simple and ordinary . 86pts

A great nose with real freshness to the shoe polish, leather, olive and roast meat tones. Big and fleshy in the mouth though a bit obvious and clumsy at the same time. Lovely in a rowdy sort of way. 89pts

This has a great bottle aged quality to the nose with a subtle sweetness adding depth to the funghi, bean starch and leather notes. Gains classic olive and woodsmoke notes which add some interest in the mouth with it's relaxed character and good length. Just a touch too loose for me, a good but not great bottle. 88pts

Paid $59.95 at Kermit Lynch in Berkeley several years ago and am a bit disappointed. A bit austere and leaves kind of slight chalky feel in my mouth, although it's a lovely color. Maybe should have aged a little longer? No, I don't think that would help. I'm thinking maybe my wine cellar is too warm? We had several power outages 2 summers ago when PG&E transformers near my house blew up. Or maybe it's just mediocre no matter what? Served it with a Scandinavian meat turnover topped with creme fraiche and chutney and a salad. Wine was adequate, but certainly not worth the price.

Huge, meaty wine. Dark purple fruit core, great structure. Needed 2+ hours in the decanter before it started showing itself.

Boom! Boom! The atomic syrah bomb has arrived...and exploded! 2003 was a very controvertial vintage as we had here in France and in Europe a major heat wave and therefore wines are most of the time atypical to say the less. On the opposite some of them present an interesting freshness, this time atypical for the vintage, such as this 2003 Cornas (100% syrah) by Clape...A masterpiece!

Features a racy core of red currant, damson plum and blackberry fruit stitched with chalky tannins and backed by warm stone and olive pit notes on the finish. Refined and firmly structured, but there is plenty of ripe, sweet fruit in this lovely, dark, full-bodied Syrah.
