Member Review by kwheeler:

Much better than most of the Californian Pinots. Full bodied and easy to drink.

August Cellars, home to multiple wineries, is located just east of Newberg Oregon at 14000 NE Quarry Rd. Our tasting room is open daily from May until the middle of October, 11-5 p.m.. We are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday year round. August Cellars believes that having multiple wineries under one roof allows the consumer to taste several different philosophies about wine with only one stop. Our in-house wineries mainly produce very small lots of Pinot Noirs, although one can always taste some of the more adventursome wines being produced here. Our goal is two fold: - Produce affordable table wines. - Keep our family farm operating. August Cellars is a family owned winery situated at the bottom of our orchards. This farm land was purchased in 1942 and our family has been farming it continuously since then. Being located in Oregon, August Cellars produces, Pinot Noirs, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztaminer and Maréchal Foch. Read less

Just way too thin, and overpowering flavors of tobacco and leather. Their 2003 Hawk's View Vineyard pinot noir was fantastic, but this effort is lacking.

Prior to decanting: Nose is fruity, with leather and a touch of pepper. Color is a light ruby, typical for a lot of Oregon Pinot noirs. Taste is light, with muted cherry, leather, tobacco and some pepper. No hint of alcohol heat. Finish is short, leaving a definite leather taste. Drinks VERY smooth, right out of the bottle. Interested to see what a couple hours in the decanter may bring out. After decanting for 2 hours: Nose is still heavy on the leather, but the fruit is showing more. Taste is still very smooth. This would be a nice summer BBQ Pinot noir, especially with a bit of chill to the wine. Still no heat. Finish is a bit longer, and moves around the tongue, ending at the back edges with a bit of bitterness I can't put a taste to. This is an okay Pinot, but a bit to light and thin for my taste. I doubt more time in the bottle is going to improve this one--it is just a light Oregon Pinot Noir. I like the smoothness, and it's lightness will do well at a summer event. In December, not so much, but still somewhat enjoyable.
