What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

I have never paid $48 for a bottle of wine in a restaurant before now. I was attracted to this wine by the wine menu in Abigail's Grill and Wine Bar in Simsbury CT. I must say that I was thoroughly pleased. I do not have the educated palate, but usually order merlots and cabernets. This wine struck a fine balance - not too heavy, a great after-taste. Now I have to find where to buy it. I see that only 929 cases were produced, so I will get on my pony quickly to find it.

After all the hype of this drinking like a $70 cult wine, a friend and I bought a few bottles at Stew's in Norwalk, CT for $22. We are both big CA cab lovers, and were both thoroughly unimpressed. Sweet, almost to the point of being cloying. Very little in the way of mouthfeel, and the finish was imperceptable. Think I'll use it to make veal marsala.

A blend of Cabernet with touches of Merlot and Petit Verdot for added fruitiness and complexity. There is a minty freshness on the nose that tells of some time in barrel. The fruit here is sourced from Rutherford and Stag's Leap, resulting a very high quality wine.

this wine is delicious. drinks at 3-4x its price point easily. accessible now, round tannins, well-balanced, full-bodied and will likely improve with age. chewy texture with aromas of blackberries, plum and coffee. on the palate, fruity with nice flavors of mocha. incredible deal, purchased a case on sale ...

according to the wineshop, this wine was relabeled under Atticus John since the cult winemaker had too much wine to sell at $100 given the current economic environment. a limited production cult cab disguised as a <$30 wine? get it while its still around...

Good lord, this is one good wine. The story I hear is that a high end CA producer is making this wine for half of what their "regular" bottlings sell for. I may not have the best palate in the world, but this wine would be a knockout at $50. It even has an earthiness that would make a Bordeaux drinker smile. My only worry is that the price will rise after people are hooked on it. Screw the economy. Buy a case like I did.

I hear these stories "relabeling" of high end Napa Cabs all the time. Stew Leonards says this one is from Vineyard 29. This is pretty hard to believe.

Any truth to these sorts of rumors ore are they all just viral marketing?
