What to Expect

Grenache is the main grape in many Rhone blends and most Cotes du Rhone and Chateaunuef-du-pape. It's a grape that yields soft, lightly colored yet full wines endowed with deep notes of strawberry and raspberry. While not prone to producing particularly rich or complex wines in France, Grenache is one of the world's most widely-planted grapes, producing unique expression where ever it is planted. It is particularly common in Spain as Garnacha, and Sardinia, as Canonnau,

2. 2007 Atteca Old Vines Garnacha - Calatayud, Spain (14.5%) - Color: inky, purple. Nose: rich, sweet, vanilla, toasty, Taste: had to decant for an hour and a half simply to drink, medium to high tannins, very hot (alcohol), acidic, blackberry, weak finish overpowered by alcohol/acidity
Lamarr: B (keeps me entertained, very strong, [God, that’s oaky], slightly overwhelming, you know, take away the oak and I could mistake it for a malbec)
Hector: B (fan of the oakiness/nose, a little to acidic, which takes away from the fruit, a slight chemical flavor, but can’t put my finger read more...

A good Garnacha ... no question. The color is a shimmering garnet/ruby right to the edge. It's a fruity, spicy, medium-bodied wine with supple tannins and classic Garnacha DNA. Loads of black cherry juice with bits of blackberry and plum. Even though the alcohol content is high, it's very light on its feet and not at all hot. Old vines aren't always better ... just different ... and in this case the altitude and age of the plantings provides a very polished and balanced profile with loads of flavor.

A bit of a sharpness to this one. An almost smoky aroma. Flavors of blackberry, and more blackberry.

Delicious - i would drink this again. Purchased off the 90 point scale (yes, I'm a sucker). Perhaps the effect is the placebo effect and I love the way it makes me feel... mellow, relaxed, happy... no, that isn't all wines.

As for the characteristics....I'd have to say bold (from my coffee descriptions)...ripe, a bit off balance, and not off-putting (on the finish)....plums...berry-ish....dark, fruit sensations... I enjoyed this out of the bottle the day I purchased it...I didn't need a meal and I could enjoy it with a nice red meat....
