Ataraxia Chardonnay Hemel-En-Aarde 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

*93 Points - Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com* A minimalist, non-interventionist winemaking approach was adopted by Kevin Grant when producing this exceptional wine. After leaving the Hamilton-Russell estate Kevin set up on his own in 2004, purchasing a 50ha site close to the ocean and high up in the Hemal-en-Aarde region. This Chardonnay is 100% barrel fermented and carefully matured in specially selected small French oak barriques sourced exclusively from Burgundian coopers. Occasional batonnage was employed throughout the 9 month maturation period. The result is a Chardonnay that is New World in provenance but Old World in stylistic leaning. A chiselled, focussed wine that effortlessly manages to be both subtle and intense. It has a rich core of fiercely expressive grapefruit, white peach, ripe pear and grilled hazel nuts aromas and flavours. The palate is penetrating and profound yet graceful and poised. A forceful mineral acidity is beautifully balanced by a subtle yet compelling intensity of fruit. A classic length, creaminess and intriguing complexity define this stylish, world class Chardonnay. Drink 2016-2023. "The 2014 Chardonnay was raised for nine months in 225-liter French oak, 26% new. The nose is very composed with fine tension. The oak here is nicely assimilated with hints of brioche and hazelnut infusing the citrus fruit and it builds nicely in the glass. The palate is clean and fresh, with honeysuckle and white peach, the acidity nicely judged and the oak lending just the right amount of creaminess on the finish. It's the kind of Chardonnay that just puts a smile on your face. This remains one of the country's best expressions of the variety and is strongly recommended." 93 Points - Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com *2013 Vintage rated 'Outstanding' - The Best Chardonnays in the World (outside Burgundy), Decanter Magazine, March 2015 Issue* "Lime and tropical fruit on nose and palate. Shows interesting complexity in the mouth with a crisp acid balance, some lees character, well-integrated oak, length and precision" 2013 vintage - 'The best Chardonnays in the world', Decanter Magazine, March 2015 Issue
