Ascheri Dolcetto d'Alba 2006

Member Review by ChefShaya:

I had the pleasure of ordering this bottle twice at NYC's Otto restaurant, owned by Mario Batali (who's notorious for his personal [excessive] wine drinking habits and very extensive wine lists). This bottle of wine goes with almost ANYTHING. It went deliciously well with the 2 pasta dishes as well as the pizzas - it compliments the cheeses, the sauces, the meats all in one harmonious balance that is so rare to find accomplished so variably and well. Texturally I would describe it as chewy - nice dry bite, great body but not overwhelming. It is both wonderful as a drinking wine as well as paired with food. Top notes of stone fruit and berries with wonderful candy flavors - I had a distinct memory of those 80's style red lollipop candies. As the evening progressed, the wine developed more complex flavors reminiscent of the fall....truly a wonderful experience!

In a world where wines are generally produced with the same grapes, the same technology, the same wood for ageing and above all the same consultants, our aim is to obtain a wine which is the expression of the vineyard it comes from, of the grapes it was made of, and above all of our own ideas. In order to achieve this, we have chosen a natural approach, with a moderate use of technology, without changing the nature of the wine with special procedures. We have attached new importance to old oak barrel ageing making choices entirely by ourselves. Read less
