Artesa Chardonnay Carneros 2011
The Carneros Chardonnay is first and foremost about aromatics, and the techniques I use are designed to retain the signature Carneros aromas of lemon-citrus and white blossom while accentuating the minerality and vivid, fresh fruit flavors of citrus and stone fruits in the wine. Partial barrel fermentation, malolactic and lees stirring create layers affect, imparting hints of cedar and honey and wrapping the flavors in a rich, generously-textured mouthfeel.
Clear, medium pale yellow in the glass. Very serious melon scents on the nose. New the heaviest, butteriest Chardonnay that I've ever tasted, but those traits are there. Again, some hints of melon. Not my favorite kind of Chardonnay, but far from the worst. US$14.39 at Total Wine.
Not a bad Carneros chardonnay. Somewhat light with a bit of oak and butter but not over the top. More creamy than crisp but decent for the price.

Artesa's architecturally-acclaimed facility opened as Codorniu Napa in 1991, dedicated solely to méthode champenoise sparkling wine production. But in 1997, with the arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversion, the winery shifted focus dramatically. Artesa was born with the inaugural release of ultra-premium still wines in September 1999. Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties.
