Artesa Chardonnay Carneros 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

The Carneros Chardonnay is first and foremost about aromatics, and the techniques I use are designed to retain the signature Carneros aromas of lemon-citrus and white blossom while accentuating the minerality and vivid, fresh fruit flavors of citrus and stone fruits in the wine. Partial barrel fermentation, malolactic and lees stirring create layers affect, imparting hints of cedar and honey and wrapping the flavors in a rich, generously-textured mouthfeel.

But in 1997, with the arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversion, the winery shifted focus dramatically. Artesa was born with the inaugural release of ultra-premium still wines in September 1999. Artesa (ahr TESS uh) means "craftsman" and connotes "handcrafted" in Catalan, language of Barcelona and our owner, Codorníu, one of the world's largest and oldest wineries. The Codorníu Group actually consists of eight spectacular wineries whose wines are enjoyed daily in over 100 countries around the world. So, while we are Napa's newest, our heritage is rich. We share five centuries of history with 15 generations of a remarkable winemaking family. Read less

Not a bad Carneros chardonnay. Somewhat light with a bit of oak and butter but not over the top. More creamy than crisp but decent for the price.

Clear, medium pale yellow in the glass. Very serious melon scents on the nose. New the heaviest, butteriest Chardonnay that I've ever tasted, but those traits are there. Again, some hints of melon. Not my favorite kind of Chardonnay, but far from the worst. US$14.39 at Total Wine.

Artesa's architecturally-acclaimed facility opened as Codorniu Napa in 1991, dedicated solely to méthode champenoise sparkling wine production. But in 1997, with the arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversion, the winery shifted focus dramatically. Artesa was born with the inaugural release of ultra-premium still wines in September 1999. Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. James Suckling scored this Chard 91 points saying “Lemon curd and pear aromas follow through to full body, slightly oily texture but lots of intense dried lime and apple character. Bigger, denser style. Old Napa. Fun."

Crisp and mouthwatering offering pear, apricot, lime and apple streaked with notes of oregano, tarragon, and hints of vanilla and honey. The vivid citrus and tropical fruit flavors are delicately wrapped in a rich and generously-textured mouthfeel. Mature acids hold the wine s structure and create length, while a touch of scrumptious cinnamon toast note lingers in the elegant finish.

WE 91pts. - According to the Wine Enthusiast: Artesa s dual fermentation approach, in which oak-barrel and stainless- steel-tank fermentation are used, has resulted in this startlingly appealing Chardonnay. Braced with Carneros acidity, it shows mineral infused orange, lemon and mango flavors, with a smooth coating of toasty oak. Winemaker Notes - A brilliant straw yellow, this Chardonnay opens with heady aromas of lime, apple, apricot and pineapple, spiked with appealing hints of honeysuckle, oregano and tarragon. Its lively entry from the wine s natural acidity is accompanied by layers of citrus and tropical fruit flavors. An underlying mineral component, along with the subtle influence of French oak, adds intrigue. This is a classic Carneros Chardonnay, finishing crisply and beckoning for another taste.

Bright, rich, focused, with ripe fig, lemon, pear, apricot and spice, turning even more complex, with layers of flavors on the finish. Best from 2000 through 2005. A new label from sparkling wine producer Codorniacute;u Napa.
