Artadi Rioja Vina El Pison(2000)

Very intense, concentrated nose. More prominent sweet cherry aromatics, with a raspberrt, summer-pudding brightness. There is still a layer of sweet oak, and a minerality at the core of this. Superb richness and concentration on the palate: really positive, forward, richly-concentrated fruit that fills the mouth and is long, and pure. Good balance and already seems well-integrated.
Burgundy-like aromas, intense flavors, a surreal lightness, and considerable finesse. It should drink well for a decade.

Very, very deep colour. Very sweet and animal and confident on the nose. Very well-balanced and broad. Opulent. Spicy, rich but not superficial. Very, very special. Dances and sings. Long.

($100; a single-vineyard wine from vines planted in 1945 on limestone-rich soil) Deep ruby-red. Bright, minerally aromas of raspberry, violet and mocha. Dense, fat and silky but also succulent, with impressive volume leavened by the wine's mineral spine. Very sexy, fresh wine of considerable class. Finishes very long and suave, with less overt oakiness. (This was aged in a combination of demi-muids and 300-liter barrels.) (European Cellars, Charlotte, NC)
