What to Expect

The Rioja region of Spain produces one of the world's finest, and most long lived wines: Rioja. Rioja's renaissance, in the latter half of the 19th century, was a direct result of the phyloxera bug that decimated vineyards around the globe. While English merchants came to Rioja to replace their French imports, the wines here actually have much more in common with Chianti. Both wines are blend relying heavily on one grape, in this case Tempranillo. Like Chianti's Sangiovese, Tempranillo usually produces a relatively high acid wine of medium to medium-full body. Tempranillo tends to produce wines with a dusty, leathery edge to its raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. With additions of Graciano, Mazuela and Grancha, the wines of Rioja can take on additional layers of flavor and aroma, but the tradition of extended oak aging for Rioja's great wines contributes to an even more obvious imprint. While the Spaniards have traditionally been fans of the strong vanilla and coconut components that American oak barrels have contributed to Rioja, more and more producers have turned to French oak favoring its more subtle spice tones. Rioja continues to undergo extended aging in barrel with Reserva and Gran Reserva bottlings, representing a producer's highest achievement, spending a minimum of 3 of 5 years respectively in the producer's cellar.

Winemakers Notes

Aged 18 months in 100% new French oak from 75-year old Tempranillo vines...Pagos Viejos is one of Spain’s greatest wines. A singular red of extraordinary stature and intensity, it exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color as well as a luxurious bouquet of lead pencil shavings, black and blue fruits, espresso roast, and floral notes...full-bodied, and dense possesses layers of flavor, a sweet integration of tannin and wood, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute.

VINTAGE

"...Wild, pungent aromas of red and dark berries, candied cherry, blood orange, dark chocolate, clove and cinnamon, with notes of vanilla and fresh rose. Very firmly built, with impressively deep, sweet red fruit flavors that are almost liqueur-like in their power and breadth. Intensely spicy and sweet on the long, succulent finish, the tannins almost completely absorbed by the luscious fruit. There's no Grandes Anades in '04, so this release includes all of the fruit that would otherwise go into that high-end bottling….94" IWC 10/06

Powerful. This mouthfilling red is thick with roasted plum, coffee and beef flavors. Muscular tannins dominate now, but floral and mineral notes emerge on the finish. Has impressive concentration and good balance. Best after 2009. 700 cases imported. Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rioja in Spain. 2004 Artadi Pagos Viejos 750ml

The best spanish wine bar none. Tremendous fruit with coffee and floral notes. Long finish with complex structure that will easily hold up for another 30 - 40 years.

The Pagos Viejos or "Old Vineyards" is a blend of the best old-vine sites of the estate. Artadi believes in Burgundian textures combined with the purity of the tempranillo grape. The wine shows kirsch and black cherry flavors, smoky tobacco notes, and a balanced acidity. This wine can age for 10-20 years.
