Arrowood Chardonnay Sonoma County Réserve Spéciale 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2005 Réserve Spéciale has a commanding bouquet of citrus, vanilla and crème brulee. The palate is richly concentrated, but still agile and balanced. The finish is long, structured and pure. This wine shows the even hand of Richard's winemaking, the character of the vineyards and the concentration and equilibrium of the great 2005 vintage. Our Reserve Chardonnay is a testament to technique and terroir. It showcases Richard Arrowood's four decades of winemaking experience; it also demonstrates the elegance and versatility of Sonoma County fruit. As in prior vintages, our 2005 Reserve is a blend of our best barrels from our best sites. For precision and structure Richard selected lots from two vineyards in the Russian River (Alary and Preston). For texture and mouthfeel he included barrels from the Alta Vista Vineyard located on the Sonoma side of Carneros. Of all the world's noble white varieties, Chardonnay has an unparalleled ability to showcase the complexities of terroir and the sensibilities of the vintner. A great bottle of Chardonnay is like a forum on winemaking technique, geology, topography, climate and varietal character. The grape is uniquely adept at conveying both nuance and power in the same wine.

Arrowood Vineyards & Winery:
The winemaking philosophy at Arrowood is simple: Produce classic varietal wines using grapes exclusively from Sonoma County's diverse viticultural areas such as Russian River Valley, Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys or Sonoma-Carneros. The winemaking philosophy at Arrowood is simple: Produce classic varietal wines using grapes exclusively from Sonoma County's diverse viticultural areas such as Russian River Valley, Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys or Sonoma-Carneros. This approach has not changed since the winery was founded in 1986 by Richard Arrowood and his wife and partner, Alis Demers Arrowood. Richard has been making wine for more than four decades. Before founding Arrowood, he was winemaker and the first employee at Chateau St. Jean. There he produced the winery's first releases: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and a wine that may have very well put Chateau St. Jean on the map - a Select Late Harvest Riesling. Arrowood Winery opened while Richard was still the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean, and for the first three years Alis ran the winery while Richard fulfilled his obligations at Chateau St. Jean. She dragged hoses in the cellar, topped barrels and ran the bottling line. She spent weekends entertaining, giving tours and hosting wine tastings. The first Arrowood wines were released in 1988. Decent wine with good richness and balance. More of the full bodied style of Chardonnay that doesn't appeal to my taste.

More my style of Chardonnay than the standard Arrowood offering. Good acidity and balance. Still has some richness. I got tropical aromas and flavors.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 95 EDITORS CHOICERich and satisfying, this opulent Chardonnay dazzles with sheer deliciousness. Master winemaker Richard Arrowood has pulled out all the stops on this Burgundian-style wine. The flavors, of pineapple custard, lemon meringue, green apple butter, creme brulee and gingersnap cookie, are balanced by perfect acidity. This is by far Arrowoods greatest Chardonnay in recent memory.Wine Tasting NotesOur Reserve Speciale has a commanding bouquet of citrus, vanilla and creme brulee. The palate is richly concentrated, but still agile and balanced. The finish is long, structured and pure.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewHere's a polished Chard with an elegant balance to a variety that often lacks both. Everything is here, from the ripe tropical fruit and rich oak to the crisp acidity and mineral trimmings, all poised in perfect equilibrium.Wine Tasting NotesRipe fruit flavors and good acid levels. The nose for our Sonoma County Chardonnay combines honeysuckle, peaches and apples. The palate is rich and lush with almonds and a touch of vanilla. The wine is well structured and impeccably balanced.

Tasting Notes:

Rich, enticing and complex from the first swirl, this wine opens with aromatics of black cherry, black berry, toast, and crème de cassis. These notes gracefully introduce the palate with a harmonious blend of plump berry fruits, notes of cedar, and well integrated tannins on the long, lingering finish.
