Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2010

External Review:

(raised in a mix of French and American oak): Deep ruby. Ripe cherry, cassis, tobacco and vanilla on the nose, with a subtle herbal undertone. Fleshy dark fruit flavors are supported by gentle acidity, taking on spiciness with aeration. Finishes sweet and persistent, with the dark berry and tobacco qualities lingering. This nicely balanced cabernet is approachable now. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is a burly wine loaded with dark red fruit, mint, flowers, spices and licorice. It reveals good depth and concentration, along with a medium-bodied personality best suited for near and mid-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.

The winemaking philosophy at Arrowood is simple: Produce classic varietal wines using grapes exclusively from Sonoma County's diverse viticultural areas such as Russian River Valley, Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys or Sonoma-Carneros. This approach has not changed since the winery was founded in 1986 by Richard Arrowood and his wife and partner, Alis Demers Arrowood. Richard has been making wine for more than four decades. Before founding Arrowood, he was winemaker and the first employee at Chateau St. Jean. There he produced the winery's first releases: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and a wine that may have very well put Chateau St. Jean on the map - a Select Late Harvest Riesling. Arrowood Winery opened while Richard was still the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean, and for the first three years Alis ran the winery while Richard fulfilled his obligations at Chateau St. Jean. She dragged hoses in the cellar, topped barrels and ran the bottling line. She spent weekends entertaining, giving tours and hosting wine tastings. The first Arrowood wines were released in 1988. Decanted 1 hour. Deep dark color. Super crimson. The nose reveals casis, currant, cocoa and blackberry. The palate is a super pure core of medium dark fruit. Maybe a bit high on the acid, but this does not detract as much as it usually would. Great mouthfeel and tannin level. This all comes together at the end in a decent finish which may show a wee bit heat. It is a good deal for $18 for 1/2 bottle. WIll be fantastic with 18 months to 2 years age on it.Another great Cabernet from Arrowood in a great year. I will stock up as it's the perfect wine when I am in the 'don't know what I want' mood. 90

Rich, enticing and complex from the first swirl, this wine opens with aromatics of black cherry, black berry, toast, and creme de cassis. These notes gracefully introduce the palate with a harmonious blend of plump berry fruits, notes of cedar, and well integrated tannins on the long, lingering finish.

Fruit forward, bright aromas of raspberries and cherries; cola and subtle well integrated oak, round, full tannins; spicy, a bit of cocoa and cola on the palate, nice lingering berries on the finish.
