Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The historic Monte Rosso Vineyard is one of the oldest and most celebrated vineyards in Sonoma Valley. Set more than 1,000 feet above sea level at the southwestern end of the Mayacamas Mountain Range, Monte Rosso was first planted in the 1880s. It was purchased by Louis Martini in 1938 and continues to produce legendary fruit from its rugged slopes. Of the 575 acres, 231 are planted to vines. The vineyard takes its name from the red soils composed of loam, volcanic ash, and iron deposits. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is made from a small block of old vines planted in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. The wine offers insight into the soils and climate of this legendary vineyard.

The winemaking philosophy at Arrowood is simple: Produce classic varietal wines using grapes exclusively from Sonoma County's diverse viticultural areas such as Russian River Valley, Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys or Sonoma-Carneros. This approach has not changed since the winery was founded in 1986 by Richard Arrowood and his wife and partner, Alis Demers Arrowood. Richard has been making wine for more than four decades. Before founding Arrowood, he was winemaker and the first employee at Chateau St. Jean. There he produced the winery's first releases: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and a wine that may have very well put Chateau St. Jean on the map - a Select Late Harvest Riesling. Arrowood Winery opened while Richard was still the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean, and for the first three years Alis ran the winery while Richard fulfilled his obligations at Chateau St. Jean. She dragged hoses in the cellar, topped barrels and ran the bottling line. She spent weekends entertaining, giving tours and hosting wine tastings. The first Arrowood wines were released in 1988. Tasting Notes:

The 2006 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon is beautifully dark red in color. The bouquet is highly aromatic, typical of this famous vineyard with notes of dried cherry, cassis, earth, and toast. The palate is complex with notes of black berry, and raspberry intermixed with ripe big tannins that lead into a lengthy soulful finish. Enjoy this wine on its own, or pair it with a range of menus. Try it with pan-roasted salmon, grilled rib-eye, or grilled flank steak, or go for a more refined entrée such rack of lamb or prime rib. With this remarkable wine, you can't go wrong.
