Arnot-Roberts Rpm Gamay Noir El Dorado County 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2014 Gamay Noir comes across as quite deep and rich in this vintage. Sweet dried cherries, mint and dried flowers are all nicely delineated in the glass. Although attractive, the 2014 doesn't quite have the nuance or complexity of the very best years. That's a small quibble considering how much pleasure and value the Gamay Noir offers. The 2014 was done with 100% whole clusters, with partial carbonic maceration and aged in neutral oak. (Feb 2016)

Arnot-Roberts was founded in 2001 in Healdsburg, CA by childhood friends, Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. The focus is on small lot, vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignons and Syrahs from some of Northern California's most incredible vineyards. Sites are carefully chosen and are generally on the cooler end of the spectrum for the planted varieties. Collaboration with dedicated and passionate growers is paramount in the farming of these sites. Duncan and Nathan grew up around winemaking in the Napa Valley. Nathan is a second generation cooper and personally builds all of the French oak barrels that are utilized in the ageing of all Arnot-Roberts wines. Visiting the forests in France each year and working in conjunction with the stave mills there, Nathan is able to select the premium lots of oak to bring back to California and assemble into the barrels for the coming vintage. Over the years Duncan has worked making wine in the Napa Valley in wineries like, Caymus, Groth, Acacia, Kongsgaard and until 2008, as assistant winemaker at Pax Wine Cellars in Sonoma County. Total production of Arnot-Roberts is around 1,200 cases per year with seven wines. Both primary and secondary fermentations are carried out utilizing native yeast and all of the red wines are bottled without fining or filtration. For the Syrahs a large portion of whole clusters are retained during primary fermentation and minimal if any sulfur is added at the fermenter. Amount of new cooperage used for each wine is site and vintage specific, generally not exceeding 30% new. For the Cabernets, hillside sites of intense character are chosen, small amounts of whole clusters are retained during primary fermentation and the wines are age for two years in varying amounts of new French Oak cooperage, selected and toasted to meld with the vintage at hand. Duncan and Nathan operate the Arnot-Roberts winery in a prohibition-era winery building in downtown Forestville in Western Sonoma County at the edge of the Green Valley appellation. Read less
