Arnot-Roberts El Dorado Gamay 2017

Winemaker's Notes:

Arnot-Roberts was founded in 2001 in Healdsburg, California by childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. Duncan and Nathan grew up in the midst of vineyards and winemakers in the Napa Valley. Each took an interest in the wine industry, with Nathan following his father’s lead as a cooper, and Duncan pursuing winemaking in renowned wineries in Napa and Sonoma. Through good fortune and a keen eye, they have identified vineyard sources that are both singular and extraordinary. Collaboration with dedicated and passionate growers is paramount in the farming of these sites and vinification of their wines. TastingNotesClassic bouquet of cherry, cranberry, pepper, stony soil ones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is medium-full, tangy and complex, with good acids, a bit of tannin and fine length and grip on the well-balanced finish. FoodPairingMeat: Roast Chicken with Herbs de Provence, Chicken Tangine with Apricots and Olives, Chicken dumplings, Chicken Liver Paté, Duck with Plum sauce, Turkey with Chestnut stuffing, Beef Stroganoff, Pork Sausages, Hangar steak with Chimichuri Cheese: Neuchatel, Chèvre, Comté, Brie, Mimolette, Saint-Nectare, Swiss Raclette, Brie with Pomegranate sauce, Cream Cheese, Farmer’s Cheese, Swiss, Gruyere, Monterey Jack Herb/Spice: Fennel, Anise, Green Cardamom, Mustard, Horseradish, Caraway, Garlic, Shallot, Chive, Leek, Marjoram, Bay Leaf, Dill, Lavender, Sage, Mint, Chervil, Pink Peppercorn, Clove, Nutmeg, Allspice, Cinnamon Vegetable: Spanakopita, Black Olive Tapenade, Roasted Potatoes with Dill, Onion Rings, Roasted Eggplant, Portabello Mushroom, Sunchoke, Spinach Salad with Beets, Red Quinoa, Capers, Apricot, Dried Cranberry, Cranberry Sauce, Walnuts, Pecans, Butternut Squash, Delicata Squash, Acorn Squash

Arnot-Roberts was founded in 2001 in Healdsburg, CA by childhood friends, Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. The focus is on small lot, vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignons and Syrahs from some of Northern California's most incredible vineyards. Sites are carefully chosen and are generally on the cooler end of the spectrum for the planted varieties. Collaboration with dedicated and passionate growers is paramount in the farming of these sites. Duncan and Nathan grew up around winemaking in the Napa Valley. Nathan is a second generation cooper and personally builds all of the French oak barrels that are utilized in the ageing of all Arnot-Roberts wines. Visiting the forests in France each year and working in conjunction with the stave mills there, Nathan is able to select the premium lots of oak to bring back to California and assemble into the barrels for the coming vintage. Over the years Duncan has worked making wine in the Napa Valley in wineries like, Caymus, Groth, Acacia, Kongsgaard and until 2008, as assistant winemaker at Pax Wine Cellars in Sonoma County. Total production of Arnot-Roberts is around 1,200 cases per year with seven wines. Both primary and secondary fermentations are carried out utilizing native yeast and all of the red wines are bottled without fining or filtration. For the Syrahs a large portion of whole clusters are retained during primary fermentation and minimal if any sulfur is added at the fermenter. Amount of new cooperage used for each wine is site and vintage specific, generally not exceeding 30% new. For the Cabernets, hillside sites of intense character are chosen, small amounts of whole clusters are retained during primary fermentation and the wines are age for two years in varying amounts of new French Oak cooperage, selected and toasted to meld with the vintage at hand. Duncan and Nathan operate the Arnot-Roberts winery in a prohibition-era winery building in downtown Forestville in Western Sonoma County at the edge of the Green Valley appellation. Read less
