Arnot Roberts Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

97 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "One of the highlights in this range, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is utterly magnificent. Deep, pliant and explosive, the Montecillo shows just how magical this vintage is for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 boasts striking inner sweetness, power and richness, all in a super-classic style built for cellaring. Lavender, plums, gravel, smoke, sage, graphite, licorice, inky fruit and dark spices add the closing shades of nuance. This dark, masculine Cabernet Sauvignon is going to need time, but it is an absolute jewel of a wine. Montecillo, which is one of the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder, has emerged in recent years as a top Cabernet Sauvignon site as a new generation of young producers are showing just what is capable here. The Arnot-Roberts 2013 Cabernets were all done with 30% whole clusters and aged in 30% new oak." 2/16

Arnot-Roberts was founded in 2001 in Healdsburg, CA by childhood friends, Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. The focus is on small lot, vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignons and Syrahs from some of Northern California's most incredible vineyards. Sites are carefully chosen and are generally on the cooler end of the spectrum for the planted varieties. Collaboration with dedicated and passionate growers is paramount in the farming of these sites. Duncan and Nathan grew up around winemaking in the Napa Valley. Nathan is a second generation cooper and personally builds all of the French oak barrels that are utilized in the ageing of all Arnot-Roberts wines. Visiting the forests in France each year and working in conjunction with the stave mills there, Nathan is able to select the premium lots of oak to bring back to California and assemble into the barrels for the coming vintage. Over the years Duncan has worked making wine in the Napa Valley in wineries like, Caymus, Groth, Acacia, Kongsgaard and until 2008, as assistant winemaker at Pax Wine Cellars in Sonoma County. Total production of Arnot-Roberts is around 1,200 cases per year with seven wines. Both primary and secondary fermentations are carried out utilizing native yeast and all of the red wines are bottled without fining or filtration. For the Syrahs a large portion of whole clusters are retained during primary fermentation and minimal if any sulfur is added at the fermenter. Amount of new cooperage used for each wine is site and vintage specific, generally not exceeding 30% new. For the Cabernets, hillside sites of intense character are chosen, small amounts of whole clusters are retained during primary fermentation and the wines are age for two years in varying amounts of new French Oak cooperage, selected and toasted to meld with the vintage at hand. Duncan and Nathan operate the Arnot-Roberts winery in a prohibition-era winery building in downtown Forestville in Western Sonoma County at the edge of the Green Valley appellation. Read less
