Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Aroma: Surprising complexity from blackberry jam to rose pot pour, rom nutmeg to pepper, from pine resin to mint, from clove to cocoa. Taste: Soft and persuasive, intense persistent finish. Fresh, with complex tannins. Pairings: This rich Sagrantino is a great wine to be paired with roasts/grills of lamb, and other meats. Black truffle, game, and aged cheeses are also lovely partners to match the tannins and body shown in the bottle. Temperature when served should be between 64-68°F. Aging Potential: Over 20 years.

As time went by he believed more and more in the great potential of the local varieties and most of all in Sagrantino. He kept buying land in the surroundings. On the nose, this wine was a monster with raspberry, holiday spices and dark forest notes. It verged on sweet but something animal about this Sagrantino, pulled it back to reality. On the palate, a massive wave of concentration was turned fresh by vibrant acidity as blackberry jam, pomegranate, cinnamon and herbs wash across the tongue like silk. The finish showed this wines intimidating structure as velvety tannin coated the mouth. The Arnaldo Caprai 25 Anni is highly enjoyable now and will likely age into something magical.

The nose shows dusty flowers, strawberry fruit and new leather. On the palate this Sagrantino came across as very stern at first with noticeable tannin. Flavors of raspberry jam and vanilla found a way through the wall of mouth coating tannin. Unfortunately, after a few hours of air this bottle closed down completely and resembled nothing short of cold tea. I was dumbfounded by the transformation of this bottle.

The darkest shade of ruby red, deep and brooding and close to black. New bottling lurching out of the traps aromatically, nowhere near tight, this wine is drinking superbly today. The best nose I´ve sampled all year, hit by potent aromas a foot away. Acres of ripe fruit, spices and vanilla, a masterclass in Sagrantino. Tannic like you´d expect, this wine is going to slay you in 10 years time but even today soft and full tannins that stay with the fruit, balance, structure till 2024. Almost perfect.

The 2000 Montefalco 25 Anni simply multiplies all the elements exponentially with room-filling aromas of sweet berry fruit and perfectly integrated oak and a mouth-coating cascade of ripe fruit, powerful, dense, and sensual tannins in a swelling flow... Big, juicy red (almost raw), with loads of berry and toasted oak. Full-bodied and chewy, with lots of oak and fruit. A wine with extract, needing time in the bottle. Best after 2004. 2,500 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator. A Sagrantino wine from Marches in Italy. 1998 Arnaldo Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni 750ml
