Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Rosso 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

"This is *a terrific wine at an attractive price point*. The 2013 Montefalco Rosso opens to rich concentration and a dark garnet color. The aromas are well defined and respectful to what an Umbrian red wine aspires to be. You get dark cherry and a touch of dried fruit in the form of cassis. Delicate notes of spice and tobacco remain very much in the background." --The Wine Advocate

In 1971 Arnaldo Caprai, a successful textile businessman, bought the Val di Maggio estate to fulfil his dream of producing his own wine. He started off with only five hectares. As time went by he believed more and more in the great potential of the local varieties and most of all in Sagrantino. He kept buying land in the surroundings. In 1988 his son Marco Caprai started managing the winery and with his passion and determination gave the necessary impetus to the production of top quality wines. Since 1991 huge investments are driven into the acquisition of new vineyards, scientific research and technological innovation. The winery starts a collaboration with University of Milan and other Instututes of Research in order to improve the results of production. After a few years, new clones of Sagrantino are identified. the experimentation goes on both on the agronomic and enological sector. The 1993 "Riserva" of Sagrantino di Montefalco, created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the company, makes of Marco the acclaimed new star in the Italian wine making panorama. Since 1995 we have been reaping the fruits of a hard work made of investments and research to offer the best of our territory. Our goal today is the same as thirty years ago. Careful and constant work aiming at excellence, research and innovation in the agronomic and enological sector, communication of the culture and identity of our region. Read less

Trick cherry syrup and rose petal aromas hanging with baking spice and a hint of ripe blueberry. Darker and richer on the palate and showing powerful structure and medium body, the fruit is lighter with cranberry, cherry and raspberry notes to start with more tannins washing in behind the fruit and settling in the mouth.

Alone, this grape produces Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG. Blended with other grapes, it produces Rosso di Montefalco DOC. This wine is very intense ruby with purple reflections, the aroma is very persistent with typical accents of blackberries, plum and earth that are perfectly bound to the vanilla given by the wood. The taste is potent, smooth and velvety. Sagrantino is a wine that should be aged at least 10-15 years. It can also be made into a dessert wine after the grapes wither. ~The Winery~

Complex and interesting wine with good value. Nose of nail polish (volatiles), spice, hints of fruit, cooling air. Drying tannins, lively acid, and lots of mouth-coating red sour ripe fruit and spice and slightly bitter leather. Finished with pleasant deep sour fruit, mostly at the front of the tongue, framed by a nutty bitter hum and some wood.

A light ruby red colour with a neat super packed, sucker punch nose. Giving up all the red berries and vanilla in typical Sangiovese style, which it should, the wine is a blended 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot show stopper. Succulent, full bodied palate, good long finish, easy drinking and exceptional QPR.

Made up of 85% Sagrantino and 15% Sangiovese this Umbria production is a great value from one of Italy's premier producers. Good balance, medium body red berry , with good minerality and earthiness. This wine is drinking well now but I wouldn't hestitate to celler it for a few years.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewRuby-red with fresh forest berries and distant floral aromas. Medium structure and finish for a solid, easy to drink Sangiovese-Sagrantino blend that sees 12 month in Slovenian casks.
