Argyle Willamette Pinot Noir 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This vintages Pinot Noir exhibits real cool climate Pinot Noir character, where structure is more apparent. The aromas include black cherry, plum pudding fruit and spices wrapped into a blanket of earth and dark chocolate. The flavor has black cherry fruit, and a sort of fruit/earth essence similar to that if you were at the center of a field of wild, summer blackberry bushes. The tannins are soft, and the structure is mineral in nature.

Prospecting the New World's coolest latitudes, Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a place ideal for late season ripened Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. Since 1987, Argyle Winery has produced world-class methode champenoise Sparkling wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay and 'silky' textured Pinot Noir from low yielding vines on winery farmed hillside slopes. Argyle was named "OREGON'S PREMIER WINERY" by Wine Spectator in 2000. Argyle farms three vineyards: Knudsen Vineyard, Stoller Vineyard and Lone Star Vineyard. The 120 acre Knudsen Vineyard was first planted between 1972 & 1974. The high elevation blocks of this landmark Dundee Hills site are key components in Argyle's sparkling wines. Knudsen provides Argyle a mix of old vine blocks and new high density blocks planted with "Old World" Dijon clones. Just south of Knudsen Vineyard in the Dundee Hills sits Stoller Vineyard. First planted in 1995, Stoller, like Knudsen, is planted using state of the art viticultural techniques. Stoller Vineyard has produced some of Oregon's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1996 Argyle purchased a spectacular 160 acre vineyard site in the east slopes of Eola Hills, known as Lone Star Vineyard. Located 15 miles south of Argyle's winery in Dundee, this warm site is planted primarily to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. This vineyard has the potential to be one of Oregon's best Pinot Noir vineyards. All grapes are hand harvested into small baskets and transported to the winery. Grapes are chilled overnight to 35F before crushing the next day. Chilling preserves the ripe fruit characteristics and naturally limits oxidation. Read less

Enjoyed an earlier vintage at a restaurant in Oregon. Easy and smooth, if a bit thin. Considering this as an additional "house wine", with its reasonable price point.

Its fruit aroma is a huge meacute;lange of bright, concentrated raspberry with a hint of citrus and creamy vanilla bean spice. The flavor is super-sweet blackberry/raspberry fruitiness with a cregrave;me brulee texture. The sweet middle segues into a long dark fruit centered finish.

Almost 15,000 cases are made of this sturdy, solid Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Itrsquo;s got more muscle and weight than the cheaper stuff from elsewhere, though not the textural interest and nuance of many single vineyard bottlings. So it falls right in the middle, and is priced accordingly, delivering red fruits, hints of herb, light toast and coffee-flavored tannins.

Winemaker Notes - The aroma is surprisingly robust. Look for dark fruit aromatics like black berry, black cherry with nice Spice Route spicy complexity. The flavor is rich and robust as well. Black cherry folds nicely into lovely fresh earth on the middle palate. The ending is ripe black cherry and plum fruited.

Argyle Pinot Noir Willamette has deep underlying scents of fresh tilled earth and Eastern spice rack further add to the complexity and wonderful smell of this classic The mouth-feel and flavor exceed what one expects from the already enticing smell. This wine has lovely balance for those red fruits wrapped up into a velvet-textured tannin shell. The center of the palate is cherry creme with bright minerality.

Light in texture, but the flavors pile up nicely, growing from delicate berry to rich plum and spice as they fill the mouth on the finish. Drink now through 2005.

The 2008 Pinot Noir Williamette Valley, medium ruby red, it gives up an enticing nose of cedar, spice box, rose petals, cherry, and raspberry. This is followed by a medium-bodied, ripe, vibrant offering with ample spicy red fruit flavors, good volume and intensity, and a medium-long finish. Drink it over the next 4ndash;6 years. Visiting with Rollin Sole, the head man at Argyle, is always a great learning experience.

Winemaker's notes:2009 was all about farming to balance Mother Nature’s surprises. Argyle's farming culture got the crop level right on. We stripped leaves after the burning sun of August and in time
