Argyle Spirithouse Pinot Noir 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

This is a refined, sneaker of a wine! The aroma is bright with an appealing purity. Look for luscious red fruit, like raspberry and cherry made deeper by fresh earth, new leather, and a hint of black pepper spices. The flavor is pure and, dare I say it, "elitist". The red fruits are fresh and ripe, fresh earth integrates with spicy, almost floral, flavors. The juicy center is signature Spirithouse. The wine is youthful now, but will "sneak up" on you with the power and richness I have come to expect from this wine.

Prospecting the New World's coolest latitudes, Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a place ideal for late season ripened Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. Since 1987, Argyle Winery has produced world-class methode champenoise Sparkling wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay and 'silky' textured Pinot Noir from low yielding vines on winery farmed hillside slopes. Argyle was named "OREGON'S PREMIER WINERY" by Wine Spectator in 2000. Argyle farms three vineyards: Knudsen Vineyard, Stoller Vineyard and Lone Star Vineyard. The 120 acre Knudsen Vineyard was first planted between 1972 & 1974. The high elevation blocks of this landmark Dundee Hills site are key components in Argyle's sparkling wines. Knudsen provides Argyle a mix of old vine blocks and new high density blocks planted with "Old World" Dijon clones. Just south of Knudsen Vineyard in the Dundee Hills sits Stoller Vineyard. First planted in 1995, Stoller, like Knudsen, is planted using state of the art viticultural techniques. Stoller Vineyard has produced some of Oregon's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1996 Argyle purchased a spectacular 160 acre vineyard site in the east slopes of Eola Hills, known as Lone Star Vineyard. Located 15 miles south of Argyle's winery in Dundee, this warm site is planted primarily to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. This vineyard has the potential to be one of Oregon's best Pinot Noir vineyards. All grapes are hand harvested into small baskets and transported to the winery. Grapes are chilled overnight to 35F before crushing the next day. Chilling preserves the ripe fruit characteristics and naturally limits oxidation. Read less

It had a very high alcohol level; almost to the point of asphyxiating you if you inhaled a little too deep. It had a distinctive plum flavor, but then had a rather acrid aftertaste along with a strong alcohol burn

Maybe 3.1 stars. Color, taking into account this is pinot noir, this wine has a deep dark color! Nose, this acts very new world, cranberries and some strawberries going on in here, some heat coming through! Midpalate, again tacking into account this is pinot noir, this wine has a lot of body (almost like merlot!), some charcoal flavors coming through, red fruits, again some heat. Finish, firm but nice tannins, red fruits are slightly dancing on my palate, lingering in the mouth, but one dimensional! Overall, this wine is really dense for pinot noir. Clearly it has a lot of potential now. I would put this away for 5-6 more years. I feel it is a little bit disjointed now because of the heat I am getting, but it is not that vibrant (it will go lighter overtime). This is only for new world lovers. Bottled at 14.5%, which is very high in my opinion for pinot noir! I must disagree with RP (my favorite wine critic) for scoring this 94. I am 89 points on this effort for now. I can see this reaching 90 points in 6 years. Happy drinking!

Had this wine at a nice restaurant. It was really good. Made the meal, one of my top 5 pinots for this price point.
