What to Expect

Oregon has only recently emerged as a source for premium wine and is winning fans over to their somewhat earthy style of Pinot Noir. With vineyards a bit cooler than most of California's, yet warmer still than Burgundy, Oregon's Pinot Noirs feature a synthesis of ripe fruit, ripe structure and transparency that draws on the strengths of both. The wines tend to have a touch of earthiness and a sense of transparency that many Pinots from California lack yet the fruit profile, full of dark berries, is decidedly warm-climate in nature.

The Nuthouse designation is used for Argyle's biggest, boldest, and tumescent style of Pinot Noir. This Nuthouse blend is predominantly based on Pinot Noir fruit from low elevation blocks at their estate Lone Star Vineyard in the Eola Hills. Nuthouse takes its name from where it is barrel aged and fermented - in Argyle's winery that was formerly a hazelnut drying facility. This is a very powerful Pinot Noir from an interesting vintage. This wine rewards the patient imbiber who lingers over a glass of wine while it develops in the glass. The aromas are comprised of a concentrated blackberry read more...

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($45) Dark red. Brooding aromas of kirsch, blackcurrant, cured tobacco and smoky bacon are impressively deep and expansive. Chewy, concentrated dark berry flavors are supported by firm but harmonious tannins and given added depth by tobacco and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes on a note of ripe cassis, with gentle spicy lift and excellent length. Serve this with hearty red meat dishes.

This is a surprisingly ripe Spirithouse wine, considering it is derived from our highest elevation spot in Knudsen Vineyard. Uber ripe fruit aromas include plum with blackberry concentrate, lovely cedar-bergamot spice, and an interesting sort of ‘bramble' character, with a rich slathering of dark chocolate nib. This is a Pavlov's Pinot kind of wine for me. The flavor is bursting with juiciness with very fine textured tannins. That concentrated blackberry fruit is so rich one could figuratively slice it with a knife. Spices of dark chocolate and cola nut are met with plum sauce read more...
