Prospecting the New World's coolest latitudes, Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a place ideal for late season ripened Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. Since 1987, Argyle Winery has produced world-class methode champenoise Sparkling wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay and 'silky' textured Pinot Noir from low yielding vines on winery farmed hillside slopes. Argyle was named "OREGON'S PREMIER WINERY" by Wine Spectator in 2000. Argyle farms three vineyards: Knudsen Vineyard, Stoller Vineyard and Lone Star Vineyard. The 120 acre Knudsen Vineyard was first planted between 1972 & 1974. The high elevation blocks of this landmark Dundee Hills site are key components in Argyle's sparkling wines. Knudsen provides Argyle a mix of old vine blocks and new high density blocks planted with "Old World" Dijon clones. Just south of Knudsen Vineyard in the Dundee Hills sits Stoller Vineyard. First planted in 1995, Stoller, like Knudsen, is planted using state of the art viticultural techniques. Stoller Vineyard has produced some of Oregon's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1996 Argyle purchased a spectacular 160 acre vineyard site in the east slopes of Eola Hills, known as Lone Star Vineyard. Located 15 miles south of Argyle's winery in Dundee, this warm site is planted primarily to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. This vineyard has the potential to be one of Oregon's best Pinot Noir vineyards. All grapes are hand harvested into small baskets and transported to the winery. Grapes are chilled overnight to 35F before crushing the next day. Chilling preserves the ripe fruit characteristics and naturally limits oxidation. Read less

David says it tastes like strawberries and cheese. I am prone to agree with at least the former. It's a gentle wine, with a softness, but not a sad lack of acids; those are there, too, they just don't prick and poke. A kind, sweet thing that is happy on its own; doesn't require food.

While as Soles repeatedly emphasizes his parameters are flexible at around two-thirds Pinot; fermented the first time in a mixture of barrel and tank; with a foundation of fruit from Knudsen Vineyard in the Dundee Hills; and having spent three years sur latte Argyle s 2008 Brut is pretty typical of the estate s basic blend. Ripe apple pear and grapefruit garlanded with honeysuckle make for a fetching nose and luscious silken palate that perfectly integrates ten or a dozen grams of residual sugar finishing with effusive fruit; hints of honey and marzipan balanced by a bite of pink grapefruit rind; lovely underlying nutty piquancy; and sheer next sip-inducing savor. - David Schildknecht Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

The 2008 Brut spent 3 years sur lie and received a dosage of 12 g/l. It displays a bouquet of brioche, pear, apple, and white peach. Crisp, balanced, and lengthy, this excellent value is meant for drinking over the next several years. As usual, Argy... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Though sparkling wine production is but a small part of this large wineryrsquo;s output, it is what appears to impassion winemaker (and co-owner) Rollin Soles the most. The powerful aromas of the 2000 Brut reveal flowers and almonds. Medium-bodied, this fine value displays flavors of candied green apples, white flowers, and nuts in a focused, bright style. Drink it over the next 2 years.

Apples and asian pear aromas with ovely fruit on the palate and just the right amount of bubbles. Drink with a light chill as an apéritif wine if you like it on the more fruit forward side.
