Archetype Vineyards Shiraz Barossa 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Gamy on the nose with a touch of crack pepper accenting a rather composty, vegetal, meaty nose. There’s a touch of volatility here and a bit of a fishy smell as well. Red-fruited up front, then turning a bit darker on the mid-palate with slightly muddy flavors supported by soft tannins and bright acidity, though there is no finish to speak of. 82pts

Smooth and refined, this polished red shows blueberry and cherry flavors nestled under a blanket of superrefined tannins, with a touch of cream as the flavors persist. Drink now through 2015. 15,000 cases made

Our 2007 Shiraz opens with a signature pop of boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry, cupped by sweet vanilla and a hint of shaved nutmeg. Dark berry and currant flavors fill the mouth, gripping the tongue through the lengthy finish. Moderate oak infuses just the right complexity and structure to support the lively fruit character. This enjoyable Shiraz is a good match for spice-rubbed steak or a hearty pasta Bolognese. - Winery

here is a bit of a watery edge to this Shiraz, but it still has tremendous concentration. It tastes like a ripe, juicy plum with blackberries and a hint of vanilla. The alcohol is 13.8% but it is integrated fairly well delivering good mouthfeel and ripe fruit flavors to the taste buds.

This wine has all the characteristics of classic Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. Minimal vineyard irrigation, low yielding vines, and a variety of vine ages (5 years to more than 50 years) gives this Shiraz its layers and fruit intensity, but with a graceful balance.
