What to Expect

Carmenère is one of a small group of wines that thrives in its adopted land but struggles to gain acceptance at home. It still is used on occasion in France's Bordeaux region where it adds color and complexity to blends with its distinctive mélange of smoky, herbal and gamy tones. In South America, particularly Chile, it ripens fully and the wines take on added layers of dark berry fruit that gives it a balance rarely achieved in France.

Winemakers Notes

Carmenère, widely cultivated in Bordeaux in the early 18th century, was brought to Chile where it expressed great affinity to the country’s terroir. It adapted so well to the soils and sunny climate of Chile that it was often called “Chilean Merlot”. Merlot is actually a misnomer since it is a noble variety in its own right. Our Arboleda 1999 Carmenère captures this grape variety’s finest attributes with its intense color and deep, spicy fruit character. Its aroma is highly complex, with unique notes of spices, mocha and paprika intermingling with vibrant layers of plum and berry. read more...

Reviews

I just tried this at a wine tasting tonight, and I must say - it was unexpected and very good. I liked its roundness, that it was fruit-forward and had a nice smoky finish. I'd like to try the other vintages, but this one was very solid for its price.

Grown in a sub-appellation of Rapel Valley, this wines greatness starts in the vineyard with meticulous vine management. All grapes are hand-picked and sorted. A best in class Carmenere from Chile.

With an intense violet color, the wine shows characteristic aromas and palate flavors of spice, black tea and tobacco which broaden out to become rich blackberries and sweet spices, helped by oak aging. The wine has a fresh fruit character, along with considerable structure, fine, sweet tannins that impart a soft texture and a long finish. Food Match: venison, veal, roasts, red meat, pasta in meat sauce, grilled vegetables, grilled meats, beef.
