Arbios Praxis Cellars Praxis Lagrein 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

During a trip to the Italian Alps, Bill became fascinated by this varietal. We first tried Lagrein while on a hunt to see the remains of Utzi, the Alpine Ice Man and oldest natural mummy. (Susan was an archaeologist in her younger days). Pronounced Lah-GRAYHN or Lah-GRINE, this cool climate, high-elevation red varietal is a 500 year-old cross between Teroldego and Pinot Noir. The Praxis Central Coast vineyard has similar climatic properties. We believe we are currently the largest producer of American Lagrein! The color of the wine is saturated purple with red highlights. Aromas of coco nibs and mulberry jam rise from the glass with hints of mocha. On the palate, flavors of crushed black fruit, blueberry and cranberry are predominant. The wine is smooth with mouth filling tannins and a long, soft, plush finish evidencing the Pinot Noir heritage.

Bill enjoyed a successful career with many prominent wineries over the last 35 years, but he felt somewhat restricted working for large wineries and yearned for his own roots. With the creation of Arbios Cellars in 1993 and Praxis Cellars in 2000, his dream of expressing his vision and creating something lasting was realized. Arbios Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is their flagship wine and the five Praxis wines are priced for more “every day” drinking. Read less

This is normally seen in blending I understand - so it was very interesting to try as a single varital I liked the heaviness of it. Pretty powerful. Not what we would drink casually but very significant wine.

This is a wine you won't stumble upon too much in your travels... an Italian varietal popular in blending, this wine has oomph and pizazz and the unique personality of a little known grape that hasn't gotten its due. Blackberry on the nose, met with smoke on the palate and finishing with a solid cedar/raisin component, this wine will serve its purpose both with savory, meaty dishes and alone as a certain palate-expander.

I had never heard of this varietal until yesterday, and still can't pronounce it. If you are looking for something different yet easily accessible, here's your wine. This smells deep and rich and like a fresh baked marionberry pie.Tastes meaty and rich with a good balance of fruit.
