Arbios Praxis Cellars Praxis Lagrein 2007
During a trip to the Italian Alps, Bill became fascinated by this wine that he had never previously tasted. We first tried Lagrein while on a hunt to see the remains of Utzi, the Alpine Ice Man. (Susan was an archaeologist in her earlier life). Pronounced Lah-GRAYHN, these grapes have been grown in Northern Italy for over 300 years. In the spirit of Praxis where Bill gets to play a little with winemaking, we decided to make our own. We found a vineyard of American Lagrein on the Central Coast.
Arbios Cellars/Praxis Cellars is a small California family wine business. Bill Arbios makes the wine ( he has never done anything else professsionally) and Susan handles much of the rest. Arbios Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is our flagship wine while five Praxis wines are priced for more “everyday” drinking.

I had never heard of this varietal until yesterday, and still can't pronounce it. If you are looking for something different yet easily accessible, here's your wine. This smells deep and rich and like a fresh baked marionberry pie.Tastes meaty and rich with a good balance of fruit.
This is a wine you won't stumble upon too much in your travels... an Italian varietal popular in blending, this wine has oomph and pizazz and the unique personality of a little known grape that hasn't gotten its due. Blackberry on the nose, met with smoke on the palate and finishing with a solid cedar/raisin component, this wine will serve its purpose both with savory, meaty dishes and alone as a certain palate-expander.
