Aquinas Napa Valley Merlot 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very aromatic with dried plum, salted plum, chocolate and black pepper aromas layered over a base of fairly assertive and toasty oak aromas. Showing nice focus on entry, this fans out across the palate with boysenberry, mulberry and red plum flavors that carry with them well judged oak spice and are built upon a bed of soft tannins and integrated acids. A subtle herbal streak builds on the back end and adds some detail to the lightly chocolaty and baked raspberry fruited finish that is a touch dry and short. The nose here is fabulous and the wine really shows very well on the palate, only slipping a bit on the finish. 87pts

To Don Sebastiani and Sons, family is clearly an important aspect of winemaking. While Don Sebastiani and Sons wasn’t founded until 2001, Samuele Sebastiani created a winery in 1904, and started growing the company, as well as the town of Sonoma. Over the years, the winery changed hands many times, but it always stayed within the family. By 2000, the winery was producing eight million cases of wine a year. However, at that time, Don Sebastiani sold many of the assets and kept only the family brand and the Sonoma winery and vineyards. Though he stepped down as CEO and Chairman in 2000, that wasn’t the end for him. In 2001, he and his sons, Donny and August, founded Don Sebastiani and Sons, eventually growing production back up to two million cases annually. Today, Greg Kitchens and Michelle McClendon, winemakers for Don Sebastiani and Sons, strive to produce high-end wine at affordable prices. They don’t just source grapes from California - they’ve also formed partnerships to create Australian and Chilean blends, further expanding the company’s reach and complexity. Read less

This Merlot is medium plum in color, with very intense aromas of blackberry, cocoa and cranberry. The palate opens with white pepper, cassis and rich black cherry notes. The long finish is supple, with lingering boysenberry and wild strawberry flavors.

Not a fruity wine, but one with various nuances of tobacco, coffee and earth wrapped in a soft, supple mouthfeel. This easygoing red is very drinkable on its own.

Soft and supple, with inviting notes of chocolate, cherries, nutmeg, and cedar. Drink now through 2005.

From cool climate vineyards this, pleasing, fruit forward red is rich, supple and smooth. It enters with flavors of plum, cranberry and white pepper. The mid-palate is loaded with cocoa and blackberry, which gives way to a refined boysenberry and wild strawberry finish. For the price it is quite nice.
