Aquinas Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit sweet and simple on the nose with intense vanilla, jammy cherry and sandalwood aromas. This is round and smooth in the mouth, a bit on the low acid side and with only modest tannins making it “fruit forward” and there's plenty of fruit here, really quite raspberry-toned with notes of red cherry and blackberry thrown in for good measure. The finish is modest and clean with good freshness. Not complicated but easy to drink and well made. 85pts

To Don Sebastiani and Sons, family is clearly an important aspect of winemaking. While Don Sebastiani and Sons wasn’t founded until 2001, Samuele Sebastiani created a winery in 1904, and started growing the company, as well as the town of Sonoma. Over the years, the winery changed hands many times, but it always stayed within the family. By 2000, the winery was producing eight million cases of wine a year. However, at that time, Don Sebastiani sold many of the assets and kept only the family brand and the Sonoma winery and vineyards. Though he stepped down as CEO and Chairman in 2000, that wasn’t the end for him. In 2001, he and his sons, Donny and August, founded Don Sebastiani and Sons, eventually growing production back up to two million cases annually. Today, Greg Kitchens and Michelle McClendon, winemakers for Don Sebastiani and Sons, strive to produce high-end wine at affordable prices. They don’t just source grapes from California - they’ve also formed partnerships to create Australian and Chilean blends, further expanding the company’s reach and complexity. Read less

Im not a huge fan of Cabernet, but Aquinas is the delicious exception. At an equally exceptional price point, this wine is a must for those who are on the fence or for those just beginning to venture into the vast world of Cabernet. As opposed to other (more expensive) cabs I have tried in the past this wine is much more gentle on the pallet and can be enjoyed as a stand alone or with many different dishes. Lamb and Veal lovers will cling to this wine! You should be able to find a bottle around $15, although I have managed to obtain it around the $10 price point. This is one of those wines where you think to yourself, "Nike Slogan" (Just Do It)!

Nice. A little Smokey but otherwise a really good Napa Cabernet. The 2007 is actually one of my favorites....But the 2005 is very nice!

Nice smell. Very acidic taste. Apparently, we drank this wine before it was ready. Looking forward to trying when it has matured.

A Bourdeaux style Cabernet that delivers in all aspects. Very smooth and easy to drink. Food friendly.

87 Points - Wine SpectatorThis is a bit rustic, but very tasty, delivering tangy cherry, plum, cassis and cedar notes, with a splash of fresh mint. Drink now through 2012.

A Bordeaux-style Cabernet that shows off a different side of Napa Valley.
