Apex Cellars Red Blend the Catalyst 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight and smoky and rather Syrah driven on the nose with dried thyme and olive notes along with mineral earth, smoke, black currant fruit and pipe tobacco. Bright juicy blackcurrant fruit dominates the plump and smooth palate with just enough fruity to buffer against the slightly austere tannins. A little meatiness and dried fruit graces the midpalate before this wraps up in a short, taut finish with a bit of drying wood tannin clipping it. Air brings out more Cabernet on the nose. lacks a bit of harmony today 87pts

Apex Cellars is one of Washington's most respected wineries. Its three brands, Apex, Apex II, and Bridgman, cover the spectrum from reserve-caliber, vineyard-designate wines to wines that can be enjoyed every day. Apex Cellars has one of the state's most enviable records for awards per wine entered in local, regional or national competitions. All of the winery's brands have received glowing reviews from respected wine experts here and abroad. Apex Cellars was launched in 1988 by Harry Alhadeff, one of the Northwest's most knowledgeable wine retailers and distributors, and Brian Carter, a winemaker of remarkable depth and experience. The combination of Harry's knowledge and experience in the wine business and Brian's uncanny ability to combine the science and art of winemaking resulted in extraordinary wines - and extraordinary success. The first year's production of 22,000 cases sold out in 10 months. Over the years, Apex Cellars has become known as a winery you can trust - a producer of consistently outstanding wine that can be served and enjoyed with confidence. Read less

60% Cabernet, 30% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 5% Syrah A bit of sweet oak shares the nose with a nutty toastiness and some blackberry and black currant fruit that has a nice gentle sweet herbal top note. A bit soft in the mouth but more closed feeling that flabby, this has a lovely core of fruit, framed with chocolate there’s a nice pool of slightly dense blackberry fruit on the palate. The tannins are not abundant but they do help add some definition to this in the mouth and there's a subtle savory black olive and leather notes on the backend adding complexity. The finish is a bit dry and austere, adding a bit of gravitas in the mouth. Today this needs a rich steak to help absorb some of the weight but with time this might soften nicely. 88pts
