Apaltagua Chardonnay Unoaked Reserva Casablanca Valley Chile 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Almost gingery on the nose with real richness of ripe fruit all spicy apple, poached pear and grilled pineapple laced. This smells terrific and has some of the character of oaked Chardonnay coming from some of the creamy, leesy notes. Rich in the mouth, polished and round with bright, well integrated acidity lending the flavors, which verge on overripe, great freshness. There’s an opulence here and at the same time a sense of restraint that allows some mineral and soil tones to join the show on the midpalate. Finishing with solid length and more mineral notes, along with apple peels and a fine citrus and spice note, this is a fabulous unoaked Chardonnay and a compelling value. 89pts

Bright and intense on the nose with layers of pineapple, passionfruit and guava notes. This is vibrantly acidic, too acidic for many palates, though it has its place like with ceviche. The fruit is quite ripe with a slightly sweet cashew edge to the pineapple and Meyer lemon fruit on the palate. The finish is a touch short but it does leave the palate clean and fresh, with lingering hints of lime peel and a hint of melon fruit. This is zesty with a nice hint of minerality on the finish, but it’s not your typical Chardonnay. Might appeal more to Sauvignon Blanc drinkers. 87pts

Fairly nice unoaked chardonnay from Chile. Lots of citrus, lemon, white pepper with a somewhat metallic edge on the finish.
