Antoniolo Gattinara Osso San Grato 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

From memory. Drank this a few months ago. Showing alot of oak at this point, not really toasty but just plain woody. The fruit was fine and the wine had very appealing minerality but the wood was overwhelming. Will it integrate? Good question, I believe so but one never knows. Try again 2011.

This opens with strong notes of mineral and leather as well as nuanced pine forest floor and old parchment. Then the nose is gripped by the sent of crumbling, wet red slate. With time the nose gains freshness and adds wonderful notes of ice, earth and flowers. In the mouth one is greeted by a strong menthol note right up front then a wave of roasted red berry fruit that is almost syruppy coats the palate before drying out a bit leaving the initial finish with a touch of must. This remains very vibrant if compressed for quite some time. It turns very linear and focused in the mouth with a jewel like core of dark, tarry and anise tinged fruit yet does reamin a bit tough and drying on the finish. Beginning it's down slope this should be consumed sooner rather than later. 2008-2012.

Piedmont, ItalyAntoniolo Gattinara Osso San Grato is a wonderful expression of the Nebbiolo grape from the Gattinara appellation of Piedmont, located far north of the Barolo/ Barbaresco zones in the Alpine foothills close to Lago Maggiore. The 2005 vintage earned the ultimate honor for Italian wines, winning Red Wine of the Year from Gambero Rosso, which also awarded the wine its coveted top rating, Tre Bicchieri. Antonio Galloni for Wine Advocate calls Antoniolo "a reference-point producer for first-class Gattinara." Galloni gave it a score of 96 points, calling it "a thrilling Gattinara. It is one of the very best Gattinaras I have ever come across." Burton Anderson in The Wine Atlas of Italy calls Rosanna Antoniolo "the most dynamic winemaker" in Gattinara. The Gattinara appellation has produced Nebbiolo wines since the 12th century, but its tiny total of 120 hectares is splintered among 100 owners, of whom only 15 bottle their own wines. Antoniolo is truly the benchmark producer with exceptional holdings in the appellation's 3 greatest crus: Osso San Grato, San Francesco and Castelle. This release is very limited!Antoniolo Gattinara Osso San Grato is ruby red in color with a nose of cherry, orange peel, dried rose, violet, spice and mineral notes. It is full in body with bright acidity, velvety tannins, and rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, anise, oak and spice. Aged in oak barrels for 30 months followed by one year in bottles, this big red will reward several years of cellaring and drink best from 2014-2027. It is long and rich on the finish.Enjoy Antoniolo Gattinara Osso San Grato with osso bucco, lasagna, veal chops and aged cheeses.
