Antinori "Tignanello" Toscano IGT Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc Vino da Tavola-Tuscano 1997

Winemaker's Notes:

"A fabulous Tuscan red, young and racy. Deep dark ruby in color, with focused aromas of blackberries, wood and very ripe fruit. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, long finish...95." WS 6/00.

Tignanello is the “Super Tuscan” label produced by celebrated Italian wine producer Antinori. The Antinori family has produced wine in Tuscany for well over 600 years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. The winery has managed to stay in the family over the centuries, now under the direction of Marchese Piero Antinori, with help from his daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia.    Tignanello has been produced since the early 1970s in the vineyard of the same name, and is credited with being among the very first Super Tuscans. It is a blend of primarily Sangiovese with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This makes it closer to a traditional Tuscan wine, the inverse of most Super Tuscans which balance more heavily on the Bordeaux grapes. It was one of the first wines in the region to be aged in small oak barrels to impart richer flavors.  Read less

Consumed with take-out from Mark's Duck House. Opened at noon, not decanted. Not quite classic Tig, more of a fruit bomb than usual- nose of dusty ripe cherries and plums with some rosemary. Palate is rich and well balanced with a lot of extraction- almost, but not quite to the point of overdoing it. Finish is quite long. Good stuff- no hurry to drink.

94 Points "Dark ruby-garnet, with aromas of meat, berry and freshly picked roses. Full-bodied, with very soft tannins and beautiful currant and blackberry character. Long, silky and caressing." Wine Spectator, Web Only - 2007, James Suckling

Reticent at first, the elements show their complexity and depth with time. Full and very dark, this offers plenty of black cherry and cedar aromas and flavors offset by impressive licorice and Mouton-like pencil-lead notes. Smooth on the palate, show... Wine Enthusiast. A Proprietary Blend wine from Tuscany in Italy. 1997 Antinori, P Tignanello IGT 750ml
