Antinori Peppoli Chianti Classico 2015

Member Review by rlb4227:

I'm not a big fan of chianti, this one was okay. Sharp, cherry flavor. I guess if you like chianti it's a decent try.

The family estate, Palazzo Antinori, was purchased in Tuscany in 1506, and later that century, banker and merchant Alessandro Antinori began to produce the wines made there commercially. Generations later, in 1928, Marquis Niccolò Antinori officially created the Villa Antinori brand, with the intention of producing an elegant Chianti fit for longevity. The wine was soon found in the cellars and on the tables of of some of the most prestigious houses, restaurants and hotels. In 1931, Villa Antinori began producing a white wine from Trebbiano, and in the 1980s, Chardonnay was added to the blend for elegance. In 2001, the estate added the production of Super Tuscans to their growing portfolio. In addition to table wines, Villa Antinori also produces sparkling wines, grappa and olive oil.  Read less

The nose showed dusty potpourri with fresh crushed cranberry, cinnamon stick, and dark bakers chocolate. On the palate, it was medium bodied with a high level of acidity pushing dry yet intense red fruit and mocha. The finish was long on the palate with some drying tannin and lots of dry red fruit extract. I was a little on the fence with this wine but it opened up nicely after a couple hours open in bottle. Once it started to show a little body on the palate, the dry red fruits and high acidity became more and more tolerable.

Vintage: • The 2015 vintage was typical of the Chianti Classico production zone. Winter was cold and relatively dry, while spring was a bit rainy with normal temperatures. • The summer was marked by warm, sunny weather. The temperature swings between warm days and cool nights created good conditions for vine growth and development. • Harvest began during the second half of September with the picking of Merlot and Syrah. The Sangiovese harvest began on September 25. Vinification • After the grapes were picked, the three varieties were fermented separately in stainless steel vats to preserve unique aromatic and flavor profiles. • Sangiovese was fermented with 10 days of skin contact, while Merlot and Syrah were given a bit longer period on their skins in order to create soft tannins and extract their fruity aromas. • After malolactic fermentation, the Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah were blended and placed into large Slavonian oak casks. • After nine months of aging in oak, the wine was bottled and aged before release. Tasting Notes: Ruby red in color with purple highlights, the 2015 Peppoli shows aromas of cherries, red currants and violets. On the palate, the wine exhibits beautiful balance with well-integrated notes of smoke and polished tannins. Blend: 90% Sangiovese 10% Merlot and Syrah Alcohol: 13.5%

The Antinori family of Florence, one of the world's oldest and most distinguished wine producers, has lived in Tuscany since the 14th century and celebrated its 625th anniversary as wine makers in 2010. The current company president, Marchese Piero Antinori, believes in the tradition that the primary role of wine is to accompany food and enhance the dining experience. This wine, Peppoli is their estate grown Chianti Classico, made by celebrated Enologist Renzo Cotarella from Sangiovese grapes with a small addition of Merlot and Syrah. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels and 10% in American oak barriques for a maximum of 9 months. James Suckling scored it 90 points saying "There's a pretty blueberry and chocolate character on the nose and palate here. It's full-bodied with juicy and bright fruit plus hints of cocoa. Drink now."

Antinori Peppoli Chianti Classico. Dark and clear black cherry red, with intense red fruit aroma, especially red currants and raspberries, are amplified by light hints of vanilla and coffee sensations. This full bodied wine is pleasantly lingering with soft, dry dusty tannins. It should be drunk while still young for full expression of the fruit. A blend of 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and Syrah.
