Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Riserva (Sangiovese) comes across as quite plush and deep. It shows lovely mid-palate pliancy in its floral red fruit along with soft, silky tannins that frame the finish. Tar, licorice and smoke are nicely layered into the finish. The Badia a Passignano is 100% Sangiovese. This vineyard ripened on the late side in 2007, giving the wine much of its textural finesse. With air, the wine is absolutely singing today.Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. Throughout its long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always personally managed the business making innovative, sometimes courageous choices, always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land. Today Marchese Piero Antinori is director of the company, assisted by his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, who are personally involved in the business. The qualities of tradition, passion and instinct have made Antinori one of the leading Italian producers of fine quality wines. Every vintage, every terroir, every idea is a new beginning, a new quest to raise our quality margins. As Marchese Piero loves to repeat: “ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation”. As well as the family's traditional heritage of estates in Tuscany and Umbria, investments have been made over time in other areas highly suited to quality wine production, in Italy and abroad, in a quest to promote new terroirs, rich in winegrowing potential. Antinori continually experiment with their vineyards and cellars, with selections of native and international clones, growing methods, vineyard altitudes, fermentation methods and temperatures, traditional and modern vinification techniques, types of wood, size and age of barrels, and various bottle-ageing periods. Piero Antinori says: “We have shown over the years that it is possible to produce internationally-acclaimed fine stylish, elegant wines in Tuscany and Umbria while maintaining their original character”. Looking to the future, Antinori explains: “There are many books in our library but they are never enough for us. Our mission is not yet complete: we are driven to express the vast potential of our vineyards and reconcile all that is new and undiscovered with Tuscany's traditional, cultural, agricultural, artistic and literary heritage. These things represent the identity of Antinori, and one of our greatest strengths is that we are in Tuscany – our essential ‘Tuscan-ness', if you will”. Read less

93/100 Supersnobs.nl

Tuscany, ItalyMarchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva is produced exclusively from the finest, most highly selected grapes grown on the Antinori estates of Santa Cristina, Pppoli and Badia a Passignano in the Mercatale Val di Pesa zone of the Chianti Classico region. The wine is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. For this outstanding 2007 vintage, the wine received a rating of 91 points from Robert Parker. At Wine Gems, we simply call it a red wine gem!Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva is dark ruby-garnet in color. On the nose, it has pronounced cherry and violet notes with nuances of tobacco. The wine is full-bodied with remarkable depth and structure. On the palate, it shows flavors of blackberry, raspberry, chocolate and spice. Aged for 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels (Alliers & Troncais) for added richness and complexity, it spends another full year in bottle before release. Beautifully balanced to enjoy now, this red has the potential to reward cellaring for another 8-10 years. It is long and silky smooth on the finish.Enjoy Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva with osso bucco, lasagna, veal Milanese, grilled vegetables, and aged cheeses.

Tignanello is the first and most consistent of the great Super Tuscans. Of course Antinori is the world famous producer of Tuscan wines, their history going back literally centuries and their vineyard holding unrivaled. Wine Enthusiast Magazine said "You can’t help but love this wine. The richness, density and intensity are all outstanding and Tignanello is extraordinary in terms of aromas and flavors. The traditional formula for this groundbreaking super Tuscan was Sangiovese with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage sees 5% Cabernet Franc for additional texture and longevity." And the Wine Advocate scored it 95 points saying "Antinori’s 2007 Tignanello is wonderfully ripe and seductive in its dark cherries, flowers, spices, tobacco, sage, cedar, mint and minerals. This is as opulent a Tignanello as I have ever tasted but there is just enough acidity and structure from the Sangiovese to keep things from going over the top. The wine’s richness and warmth are such that in a blind tasting I mistook the 2007 Tignanello for a wine from Maremma! The dense, muscular fruit follows through to an impeccable finish with no hard edges and impossibly fine, silky tannins. Simply put, the 2007 is a magnificent Tignanello. The 2007 Tignanello is 80% Sangiovese aged in 300-liter French oak barrels (1/3 new), 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, both aged in 100% new 225-liter French oak barriques. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027." Limited!

Always one of the most outstanding Chianti Classico Riservas. Wine Advocate scored this 2007 91 points saying "The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is a fleshy, radiant wine graced with expressive dark red fruit. This is a fairly plush style for this bottling, no doubt owing to the personality of the vintage... pleasing to drink young. Tobacco, sweet herbs, licorice and dark red cherries leave a very positive, lasting impression. The Marchese Antinori is predominantly Sangiovese, with a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate’s vineyards in Peppoli, Badia a Passignano and Tignanello. The darker color and flavor profile and presence of Cabernet relative to the 100% Sangiovese Badia a Passignano Riserva makes the Marchese a baby Tignanello of sorts. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020."

An intense ruby red with aromas of blackberries and cherries under spirits along with sensation of spice and tobacco from the careful aging in barrel. On the palate the wine is very solid with notes of vanilla and chocolate, supple and soft in its tannins and accompanied by the vibrant acidity which characterizes the Sangiovese grape as a variety. The complexity and length on the finish are excellent.
