Food Pairings for Anselmi Capitel Croce
Rich spun gold hue. The nose bursts forth with a fountain of apricot tart, biscotti, glazed quince and plump golden raisin aromatics. Beautifully viscous it coats and permeates the palate with golden delicious apple, dried apricot, candied tangerine peel and a perfect dose of uplifting acidity. The finish is long and tapered and hints at shortbread, pastry crust and marzipan custard.
TN: 2003 Anselmi I Capitelli Passito Bianco (Verona IGT); 12.5 pabv; WineCommune/JBuckley, $6/375 ml (retail more like $32).Full gold with a hint of green. Nose of smoke, leather, oatmeal with cream and honey, truffles, and dried marjoram and grasses leading into full-throttle perfectly ripe pineapple and orange or tangerine oil.Thickly sheeting full-bodied wine, with a powerful sweet and sour attack, and evidence of great energy. Sweet pineapple and orange juice notes, showing much more acidity than I expected, based on critic's notes. Shows intense presence on the finish.92/100, which is what I scored it once before, but is it worth another half-point just because it's so sexy? Yes, this wine went for six bucks on WineCommune, one of my best finds there. Mike and I bought a whole half-case. One corked bottle thus far. (92 pts.)

Top 30 Italian Wines Under $30/ Roberto Anselmi is a true rebel - he not only rides fast motorbikes but has turned the makeing of white wine in northeast Italy on its head with his emphasis on quality over quantity. His success is obvious in his interesting and complex Capitel Croce. It's redolent of ripe citrus fruits, and touched with highlights of spice, wood (not oak, but wood) and an intriguing minerality.
Age-Worthy Italian White Wines: Some Recommendations/ Roberto Anselmi gave up the Soave designation to work with higher percentages of Garganega (100 percent in this wine, 80-85 percent in Capitel Foscarini) than the Soave discipline allows. The results are important, round, full-flavored wines of great structure and longevity. The 2002, 1998, and 1995 vintages all tasted harmonious and live.
Capitel Croce 2006 - Bronze, San Francisco Int'l Wine Competition/ About the 2009 San Francisco Wine Competition: Winners were selected from 4,275 entries this year. The “competition continues to be the biggest and most prestigious in the United States.”
Capitel Croce 2006 - 88 Points, eRobertParker.com/ The 2006 Capitel Croce is 100% Garganega aged in French oak. It reveals a honeyed expression of perfumed apricots with an additional layer of volume from the oak. This full-bodied white is best enjoyed over the next year or two.
