Annika Vineyards Syrah Livermore Valley 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit medicinal and liquory on the nose with perfumed yet matte fruit. There’s plenty of oak here but there is also some nice fruit, plum skins and raspberries, coffee candy, a bit of sassafras, and slow to emerge vanilla notes, hints of tobacco. This enters with a nice, lithe feel and gains juicy richness over the mid-palate. This is bursting with fresh, red plum and wild black berry fruit notes in a very soft, silky style. The finish is long and subtle, adding some subtle wood shavings and nice earthy notes with a hint of green citrus. This is fun and bright with nice transparency and a very natural feel. 91pts

The aroma is kind of intoxicating, with some dark berry and wood qualities, a spot of varnish, eucalyptus, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The attack is very light, and the body takes awhile to really settle in, and you have some really drawn out length, with the soft tannins giving way to a warm alcoholic heat. This wine should be appealing to many drinkers, and retains some complexity if you're interested.

Rich ripe black cherries on the nose. Lean up front but its full bodied spice slowly creeps up on you and erupts with jam, pepper, and a little but of toasted oak. Slightly syrupy but elegant finish.

dark ruby with watery rim. medium bodied, mouthwateringly high acidity, surprisingly silky and light tannins for youngish american syrah. a bit strong with the new oak, but nice black pepper, a little meaty, and raspberry jam. this'll be more yummy tomorrow.
