What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

"The Copper Trail" was a route forged by prospectors following the discovery of copper at Burra in the late 1840's. The Copper Trail passed through the Clare Valley just south of Watervale through land on which the vineyards of Annie's Lane today produce some of the region's finest wines.
Copper Trail Cabernet Shiraz is made with a minimal intervention approach, retaining and enhancing the natural expression of the fruit. Small batch open fermenters were used to keep vineyard parcels separate, allowing the winemaker to maintain and develop the unique characteristics read more...of each vineyard. Some parcels finished fermentation in oak while others were left to macerate on skins for up to 14 days after completion of fermentation. The wines were gently pressed into a combination of new and one-year old French oak barrels to mature for 24 months.
The 2002 vintage had late winter rains and reasonable flower set. The cooler summer ensured a late, long vintage, enabling the fruit to develop intense color and flavor, plenty of fruit depth and fine structure. These conditions were ideal to produce exceptional fruit perfect for crafting a Copper Trail Shiraz. This wine is a culmination of the very best fruit the Clare Valley has to offer, with vineyards selected for their highly distinctive characters. The result is a wine displaying complexity of flavor and structure, with the individual vineyard attributes layered together to achieve a balanced and synergistic whole. Annie's Lane Copper Trail Cabernet Sauvignon reflects vineyards selected for their distinctive character and will reward for up to 10 years.
