Anima Negra Red Blend VI de Taule de Balears Àn/2 2006
This is a wine made from specific vineyards, whose character reflects several unique factors; the old callet vines (40 to 60 years old) that are only found in Mallorca; the poor soil with good mineral content (iron oxide) lying over calcareous rocks and the fact that the vine roots have to dig deep to compete with fruit trees planted amongst the vines. The wine artfully reveals all of these qualities.

Decidedly smoky on the nose and certainly marked by time in oak though this does have a nice bed of wild cherry fruit with a certain meatiness to the nose with mint, earth and tea notes growing in the glass. On entry this is rather smooth and refined though the slightly rustic tannins pop on the palate along with a nice blend of vaguely medicinal tones, lightly baked cherry and plum fruit and nice herbal top notes. There’s a nice lashing of vanilla and sweet oak tones but they don’t detract from this at all. The finish is nice and fresh if neither particularly long or intense though it does have a certain Pinot like quality to it. This is absolutely worth trying for its unique blend of rusticity and elegance as well as the flavors that start out rich and lightly medicinal before turning haunting and earthily fruity. 93pts
Distinctive Àn nose here, marked by rustic Mediterranean elements: rosemary, oregano, sea-breeze and then soothing, subtle, creamy lactic sensations. This is a tremendously interesting wine, with unusual flavours of marzipan, raspberries, and a maple syrup finish. It's great that this wine, made from the local varieties Callet (the dominant variety), Manto Negre and Fogoneu, is consistently interesting, vintage after vintage, and always true to its unusual terroir. Highly recommendable and special. 94 points. As of July 2008, this wine is not yet on the market, it's from a pre-release tasting.
Herbed and a bit musky on the nose. Wonderful cherry pie on the palate, ending on a bit of a cherry cough syrup (in a good way, promise!) finish. Smooth and juicy.
Not bad at all for the little sister of Àn. Similar nose, faintly reminiscent of Pinot, with a violet scent dimension, lovely nutty, sweet spice sensations and a truffly, minerally finish. 91 points.

Wine Advocate 2010 “The 2006 AN was sourced from the Son Negre Vineyard in central Mallorca and is composed primarily of Callet with a small amount of Mantonegre-Fogoneu aged for 17-19 months in new French barriques. Dark ruby-colored, it delivers an enticing perfume of wood smoke, Asian spices, espresso, rosemary, cinnamon, and black raspberry. Very concentrated and already revealing complexity, on the palate it is succulent, spicy, and elegant.”
