The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

11/02/07 - extremely costly if purchased today - our wine group purchased years ago - however, opened to soon - decantered - and sat for 90 minutes before tasting never brought out the flavors of the wine - however, we can say we tasted the wine - h/b

The awesome 1997 Sori Tilden (10 000 bottles produced) is a candidate for perfection. The saturated purple color is followed by a dense full-bodied wine possessing extraordinary vibrancy for such a heavyweight muscular Nebbiolo. It offers a super-sweet entry a boatload of glycerin and notes of earth licorice cedar blackberry and cherry liqueur and a touch of blueberries. Extremely full gorgeously pure with a seamless texture this spectacular 1997 will enjoy three decades of cellaring.

Deep red-ruby. Sweet aromas of plum, spun sugar and nutty oak. Rich, round and suave, but kept firm by an edge of acidity. Less expressive today than the Sori Tildin, and more dominated by its structure. Finishes firmly tannic and uncompromisingly

...Profound yet rather reticent nose hints at blackberry and violet; less roasted than the Costa Russi and more precise. Lush thick and large-scaled with great penetrating sweetness. Voluptuous and mouthfilling yet sharply delineated at the same time. Amazingly thick seamless Barbaresco finishing with lush tannins and uncanny persistence... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
