Andrew Will Red Bordeaux Blend Washington Sorella 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Andrew Will Winery was started in 1989 and is owned by Chris Camarda. The winery was launched out of a love for wine that Chris had developed while working in the restaurant trade for almost 20 years. Named after the Camardas’ son Will and nephew Andrew, Andrew Will has been a major contributor to the success and notoriety in recent years of Washington State wines. The delightful Sorella 2007 is made from 65% Block I and II Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.

Initially, the winery consisted of 900 square feet of rented industrial space in Seattle. In the early days, everything was done by hand from shoveling grapes into crushers, to labeling and delivering the wine. In 1994, the Camardas moved to Vashon Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, where they built the present winery. They now have two buildings which allow them to make about 4300 cases of wine a year. They have also purchased land in Eastern Washington and planted 36 acres in grapes. Andrew Will makes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. As Chris Camarda has developed his style of winemaking over the years, he has focused on the primacy of the vineyard over variety. It is now the driving force behind Andrew Will. While the idea of terroir has become almost a hollow marketing tool, it has great attraction for Chris in its purest form. "I believe that an individual piece of property can form a signature - an identity - and it is that face that is the focus of my winemaking, " he said. "We are trying to let the vineyards reveal themselves. I believe that if Washington is ever to be considered a great wine region we need to establish the characteristics of our geographical areas and the characteristics of each vineyard in those areas," he added. He also believes that blends of varieties also make the most complex and attractive wines. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot, two grapes which mature beautifully over the long growing season in Eastern Washington, when blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, best express the characteristics of a vineyard. For instance, the 1999 Sorella is made up of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet France and 15% Merlot. Andrew Will has no plans to increase the size of the winery or its output but instead to focus on the vineyards and the care needed to produce the kind of fruit to satisfy the Andrew Will ideals. This highly perfumed, deeply fruited Bordeaux blend possesses the seamless fruit-structure integration that I have come to expect from Washington. The tannins are silky and the acidity bright, keeping the expansive breadth on the palate and significant extraction in check.

Lithe, focused and beautifully detailed, offering a gorgeous array of floral-accented blackberry, boysenberry and anise flavors, lingering easily on the deftly balanced finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2017. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Andrew Willsrsquo; flagship wine is called Sorella; the 2007 Sorella, sourced entirely from the Champoux Vineyard, one of Washingtonrsquo;s finest sites, is made up of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. Aromas of toasty oak, espresso, Asian spices, incense, black currant, and blackberry lead to a firmly structured wine with impeccable balance and serious aging potential. This pleasure-bent offering will offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2032, perhaps longer.

Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, WashingtonAndrew Will Sorella is a superb red wine gem from Washington!RP 96; Jay Miller for Wine Advocate:"Andrew Wills' flagship wine is called Sorella; the 2007 Sorella, sourced entirely from the Champoux Vineyard, one of Washington's finest sites, is made up of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. Andrew Will, located on Vashon Island, a short ferry-ride from Seattle, is where Chris Camarda fashions his blended, Bordeaux-style wines. Without prompting Camarda told me (as he did Lettie Teague in a Wall Street Journal interview) that business has been very difficult, that he is cutting production, and that in the 2008 vintage he has fashioned two varietal wines that can sell within the range that American wine consumers are willing to spend. That said, the current releases of Andrew Will wines from the 2007 vintage are as good as or better than anything Camarda has done before."Enjoy Andrew Will "Sorella" with filet mignon, rack of lamb, venison, rich vegetable dishes and aged cheeses.

The 2006 Sorella is produced from Block 1 of the Champoux Vineyard and is the winery's flagship. It is composed of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Saturated purple in color, the nose offers up an enticing mix of pain grille, pencil lead, espresso, incense, black currant, and blackberry. Already complex, this layered, fleshy, intensely flavored effort will benefit from another 4-6 years of cellaring and will have a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2026.

Produced entirely from fruit acquired from Paul Champoux's Champoux Vineyard, the 2002 Sorella is fashioned from 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot. Tar-laced black fruits, sweet spices, and herbs are found in this beauty's aromas as well as flavors. Medium-bodied, muscular, and intricate, it is a lovely, concentrated, as well as complex offering with a long, flavor-packed, and slightly warm (from alcohol) finish. Drink it between 2007 and 2018.

Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, WashingtonAndrew Will Sorella is a superb red wine gem from Washington! A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc spending 21 months in oak.WS 92; RP 94; Jeb Dunnuck for Wine Advocate:"Loaded with promise, it has a decidedly pure, classy and detailed bouquet of black currant, graphite, licorice, roasted meats and singed herbs. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it still holds onto the overall elegance and finesse driven style of the estate and delivers a seamless texture, chewy tannin and serious minerality on the finish. As with Chris other 2010s, short-term cellaring is warranted here and upwards of two decades of longevity should be expected. Drink 2015-2030.Made by Chris Camarda from his base on Vashon Island just west of Seattle, Andrew Will Cellars delivers classic, elegant wines that show solid typicity and age-worthy profiles."Enjoy Andrew Will "Sorella" with filet mignon, rack of lamb, venison, rich vegetable dishes and aged cheeses.
