Andrew Murray 'Tous les Jours' Syrah 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Intense and complex on the nose with cracked black pepper, violet, roasted beef, hints of mushroom and root beer and a lovely, funky, gamy base notes. Bright on entry even if this lacks a touch of acids. A fairly big wine with wonderfully fresh flavors of black fruit, hints of currants and plums, with savory almost peppery accent notes and deep savory, green olive and green cardamom pod nuance on the palate. This is fairly seamless and while fruit driven not fruity per se. The tannins really refresh the palate and the wine shows fine length on the subtly spicy and persistently fruity in that gamy sort of way that Syrah sticks around on the palate. This fills the mouth and while it’s big it’s not terribly weighty, though it does need some pretty intense foods to pair with it. With this delicate yet intense fruit I’d love to try this with my stand-by Pinot ready Salmon dish, roasted with sundried tomatoes and chipotles. 88pts

"Handcrafted wines, from hillside vines, planted exclusively to Rhone varieties..." Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late ’80s while traveling through the Rhône Valley. He took that passion further when he headed out for a short internship in Australia in 1992 to learn more about the famed Australian Shiraz. There he fell so in love with Syrah that he overstayed his planned three months by almost a year. When he returned home, he earned a degree in viticulture and oenology from U.C. D avis and started his eponymous vineyard and winery, working with growers who mirrored his passion for excellence. He found vineyard owners who matched his desire for perfection, and who farmed their vines to ruinously low yields with the most advanced viticultural methods. Andrew’s razor sharp vision can be surmised succinctly in the company motto, “Handcrafted wines from steep hillside vineyards, planted exclusively to Rhône Varieties.” All of the focus, passion, and dedication have paid off. Today, Andrew Murray Vineyards is considered, “One of Santa Barbara’s finest wineries,” by Robert Parker,Jr. and the editors of Food and Wine magazine were in agreement when they named Andrew as the “Tastemaker Of the Year” in 2004. 14.5% ABV. Dark purple with a magenta hue in color. Lots of dark fruit on the nose. Pop and pour it was dark fruited that edged to tart rasberry with some slightly bitter tannin. It finished with fruit and the bitterness hanging in for the long haul. We'll see how it develops.

That does Rhone style reds at this price is good...that they are at a consistently high level is even better. this is big and bold, blueberries, sweetish dark cherry tannins, some cigar box, violets - yumm. 91 points - drink now - Paul

The 2013 vintage is slightly more acidic that the previous vintage which means better balance. Bring on the steak.

This sat well and the wine has "married" up to create a more seamless juice. Blueberry, blackberry and a touch of dirt, white pepper and licorice are front and center. Recommend Italian beef sandwiches with mince horseradish/sour cream blend, red onions, sliced tomato on a toasted split bun. Drink now - Paul 88 points

Remarkably dark and full-bodied, and yet it has such gentle tannins. It is truly a pleasure to drink, especially at the price. Lots of fruit and spices here...no need to wax poetic about this one as it tastes just plain yummy.

Ripe and fleshy, a pleasurable wine with grapey wild berry and black cherry fruit that firms up on the finish, with a chewy edge to the tannins.-From Wine Spectator
