Andrew Murray Syrah Santa Ynez Valley Reserve 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The McGinley vineyard was previously known as the Westerly Vineyard, so this is a vineyard that we are very familiar with as we have been purchasing fruit from here for the last 5 years. It lies in the Eastern reaches of the Santa Ynez Valley...in a relatively HOT climate. Here Syrah gets very ripe, and dark and fruity. We work very hard with Coastal Vineyard Care, the management team there, to ensure that we get the best fruit possible. We have 3 different sections with differing clones and rootstocks under long term contract; this wine is a blend of the best barrels produced from this vineyard. We bottled up just 250 cases of this vintage and it will not last long. Though a farily BIG Syrah, I would suggest drinking this over the next 3 years.

"Handcrafted wines, from hillside vines, planted exclusively to Rhone varieties..." Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late ’80s while traveling through the Rhône Valley. He took that passion further when he headed out for a short internship in Australia in 1992 to learn more about the famed Australian Shiraz. There he fell so in love with Syrah that he overstayed his planned three months by almost a year. When he returned home, he earned a degree in viticulture and oenology from U.C. D avis and started his eponymous vineyard and winery, working with growers who mirrored his passion for excellence. He found vineyard owners who matched his desire for perfection, and who farmed their vines to ruinously low yields with the most advanced viticultural methods. Andrew’s razor sharp vision can be surmised succinctly in the company motto, “Handcrafted wines from steep hillside vineyards, planted exclusively to Rhône Varieties.” All of the focus, passion, and dedication have paid off. Today, Andrew Murray Vineyards is considered, “One of Santa Barbara’s finest wineries,” by Robert Parker,Jr. and the editors of Food and Wine magazine were in agreement when they named Andrew as the “Tastemaker Of the Year” in 2004. Very ripe on the nose and full of meaty, grilled beefy notes over licorice and bay leaf edged dried plum and mulberry fruit. Cool and crisp on entry with a rich, slightly matte mouthfeel. The finely angular tannins quickly make their presence known as they poke through the very black and spicy core of savory fruit. This is still youthful and at a bit of an in between stage since the fruit has started to develop some complexity but the structure remains very youthful. Lot’s of candied plum fruit on the backend leads to a spicy, peppery candied cherry finish that ends on a very long licorice tone. 89pts

A young precocious Syrah bordering on obscene. Ok, maybe not all that, but it has tons of alcohol, tannin, and of course, flavor. To be honest, it reminded me a bit like gasoline, but the good kind like Chevron. That hint of sweetness you get when the pump first opens up. I know, but that's what I got in the nose and I liked-ed it!

Outstanding, I love almost all the wines from Murray but the Watch Hill really stands out. Very rich but not heavy, bursting with fruit but not cloying. Couldn't recommend more.

Something I rarely say but this Syrah was a little overboard on the fruit even for me. It's richness is evident the second you pour it and view the deep, almost black color but right now the fruit is so overpowering it's almost cloying. Probably a few years of aging and it will be something special but if you want to drink a Syrah today Murray has better choices.

Wine Tasting NotesWe refer to our "everyday" and easy-drinking Syrah as our "Tous les Jours". This is a blend of Syrah from Paso Robles and Syrah from our Estate. It is produced and carefully blended to be soft and smooth and full of ripe berry aromas and flavors.
