Andrew Murray Syrah Santa Barbara County Watch Hill Vineyard 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

This cool-climate Syrah is refreshing, rather than heavy or cloying. Includes 5% Viognier. The aromas and flavors lean toward bright red fruits...cherries, raspberries, currants, and cranberries, with just a touch of a floral/violet note (from the Viognier) and spiciness dominated by fresh black pepper and a dose of sweet French oak. This wine is quite quaffable now, but you will be rewarded if you wait 2-10 years to drink this one. Not yet reviewed; 2011 vintage rated 92 points by Antonio Galloni.

"Handcrafted wines, from hillside vines, planted exclusively to Rhone varieties..." Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late ’80s while traveling through the Rhône Valley. He took that passion further when he headed out for a short internship in Australia in 1992 to learn more about the famed Australian Shiraz. There he fell so in love with Syrah that he overstayed his planned three months by almost a year. When he returned home, he earned a degree in viticulture and oenology from U.C. D avis and started his eponymous vineyard and winery, working with growers who mirrored his passion for excellence. He found vineyard owners who matched his desire for perfection, and who farmed their vines to ruinously low yields with the most advanced viticultural methods. Andrew’s razor sharp vision can be surmised succinctly in the company motto, “Handcrafted wines from steep hillside vineyards, planted exclusively to Rhône Varieties.” All of the focus, passion, and dedication have paid off. Today, Andrew Murray Vineyards is considered, “One of Santa Barbara’s finest wineries,” by Robert Parker,Jr. and the editors of Food and Wine magazine were in agreement when they named Andrew as the “Tastemaker Of the Year” in 2004. Slightly reduced but still quite intense and fragrant on the nose. Meaty and oaky on the nose with a slight undertone of passion fruit topped by lightly minty black cherry and boysenberry fruit. Rich and fairly ripe in the mouth with an almost silky feel though there are obvious firm tannins underpinning the fresh, broad and bright fruit. This is very berry toned with slightly wild and foxy boysenberry notes. There’s a gentle draping of spice over the mid-palate with more assertive spice, and slightly drying wood tannins, emerging on the finish. The tannins clip the finish a touch but this has lovely purity of fruit. 90pts

Raw beef and balsamic herbs greet the nose. Slowly this develops very fine herb and tobacco notes with a fine tarragon and cracked pepper top note. On entry this shows excellent balance and ripeness with a leading vein of acid quickly subsumed by ripe black plum and black currant fruit all supported with fuzzy tannins. The mid-palate is broad and dense with subtle violet tones adding some vibrancy to the plummy fruit. The finish sees the fruit perk up in gloriously peppery black splendor. This is a big wine but fairly elegant with a very expressive and balanced core of fresh fruit. The tannins should melt away over the medium term. 91pts

Delicious! Enjoyed this wine with Bacon-Jalapeno Wrapped Shrimp and Mango Chutney.

Somewhat disappointing after the amazing 2006 Watch Hill Syrah. Still a very nice wine, faint tannins, a hint of pepper.
