Verlieu-Chavanay is a small village 15 km south of Vienne and is the place where André Perret practises the art of wine-making. A young biololy graduate, his passion for the vine made him return to the village, where he succeeded his father in 1982. The farmland, then mainly occupied by fruit-trees, was planted with vine-stocks and extended to 10 hectares. Located on the right bank of the Rhône and enjoying the best climate of the appellation, the vine-covered hills produce the grapes for the « Côtes du Rhône » vintages. André Perret's Condrieu, his Saint-Joseph and also his Côtes du Rhône and his varietal wines , have flavours and aromas expressing the exceptional growing conditions of the vines and the meticulous attention given to the making of the wine. Terrace cultivation of these vines on steep hillsides involves some difficulties for wine-growers. Nevertheless they are willing to preserve the terroir and nature. Because of the narrowness of the terraces, the use of any machine is impossible, all work must therefore be done manually. The vines are cultivated entirely by hand. André Perret is keen to avoid systematic treatments. of his vines. All these operations are carried out when necessary only.
