Andre Brunel Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvee Sabrine 2013

Member Review by Eric Guido:

The nose was earthy yet sweet and highly expressive, showing crushed cherries, floral tones, brown sugar and spice with bacon, charcoal and woodsy notes making the occasional appearance. On the palate it was very rich with a hint of sweetness to it's jammy red and black fruits yet still structured and very spicy. The finish showed a bit of drying tannin that should meld gracefully with all of this fruit over time.

I like this wine very much -- nose is full of interesting scents (including bacon!), the tannins and fruit are very well balanced. However, my only criticism is that of all Rhones. They are not as exciting as other wines. Even a good Beauj' is more exciting than this wine.

Dark and intense, with notes of roasted meat, plum and black olive that give way to an espresso note and chalky tannins on the finish. Pretty stern stuff, which just means you’ll want to give it another year or two before drinking it over the next 5–6 years.

Deep, rich garnet. Medium-bodied. Cassis, wild strawberry/boysenberry flavors. Dry finish. For pizza, tacos, chili, pork tenderloin and Mexican food.

Slightly richer with sweeter fruit and additional ripeness as well as higher alcohol is the Andre Brunel 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cuvee Sabrine. This Grenache-dominated offering possesses a dark ruby/purple-tinged color in addition to lots of lavender, black currant and cherry notes intermixed with notions of forest floor and tobacco leaf. Drink this medium to full-bodied 2009 over the next 2–3 years.

Quite ripe, delivering dark plum, anise and crushed blackberry fruit notes laced with a graphite spine. A nice grippy edge marks the finish. Drink now.

Mostly Grenanche in this Rhône blend. The nose is a bit on the sweet side, with wild berries and pepper, but the palate brings it back to a more traditional style with a touch of acidity. Have this wine with some hardy winter stews or a pork roast with rosemary and garlic.
